The computer systems that support three of these facilities are discussed and some details of the synthesis procedures are given. Data from the following satellite series are included in the discussion: TIROS, NIMBUS, ESSA, NOAA, SMS/GOES, ATS, and SOLRAD. Orbital position data for HAWKEYE 1, IMP H and J, VELA 5B, PIONEERS 6-9, PIONEER 11, HELIOS 1 and 2, and SOLRAD 11A and 11B in several coordinate systems are discussed.

AP-8 trapped proton environment for solar maximum and solar minimum

Data sets from Ov-3 and Azur indicate a need for improvement in models of the stably trapped proton flux with energies between 0.1 and 400 MeV. Two computer accessible models are described: AP8MAX and AP8MIN. The models are presented in the form of nomographs, B-L plots, R-lambda plots, and equatorial radial profiles. Nomographs of the orbit-integrated fluxes are also discussed. The models are compared with each other, with the data, and with previous AP models. Requirements for future improvements include more complete data coverage and periodic comparisons with new data sets as they become available. The machine-sensible format in which the models are available are described.

AE 6: A model environment of trapped electrons for solar maximum

A projected inner zone electron model environment, AE 6, for the epoch 1980 is presented. It is intended to provide estimates of mission fluxes that spacecraft will encounter in the coming solar maximum years. AE 6 is presented by graphs of omnidirectional integral flux as a function of L shell, the ambient magnetic field B, and the energy E. Results of orbital integrations for altitudes from 150 n.m. to 18,000 n.m. are given for circular orbits with four different inclinations, using the AE 6 and the AE 4 solar maximum models for the inner and outer zones, respectively. The derivation of AE 6 is described, and a brief comparison is given of the radial profiles of equatorial fluxes from several related models. A short summary of the associated computer programs is included.

Identification of satellites possibly active during the IMS and their orbital configurations

A survey has been made to identify presently operating as well as planned spacecraft which may contribute measurements of the magnetosphere or interplanetary medium during the IMS. The total set consists of 25 scientific earth-orbiting, 9 heliocentric, and 17 communication, navigation or meteorological spacecraft, which carry environmental monitoring experiments. The orbital elements of each are displayed. In addition, techniques for the display of positions in various orbits are presented to illustrate how interesting configurations can be determined during the IMS. The positions of presently orbiting heliocentric spacecraft are shown at various intervals with respect to the nominal interplanetary magnetic field spiral and the earth. Plots of the latest ISEE-A orbit in solar magnetospheric co-ordinates are presented to determine neutral-sheet crossing.

Comparison of the trapped electron models AE-4 and AE-5 with AE-2 and AE-3

Models of geomagnetically trapped electrons are compared to estimate mission flux changes. The differences in the model environments were caused by a change in both the existing environment and the available data from which the models were derived. Different data analysis techniques have also influenced the models. This report compares the dependence of the flux to each of the relevant variables. To show the effects of the model differences, included are a comparison of orbital flux integrations for a range of orbits.

A model of the trapped electron population for solar minimum

A model is presented of the trapped electron environment of solar minimum conditions. Solar maximum models have been presented for the inner radiation zone (AE-5 1967), and for the outer radiation zone (AE-4 1967). The present solar minimum model consists of an inner zone model (AE-5 1975 Projected) with an epoch of 1975, and an outer zone model with an epoch of 1964. With only minor modifications this latter model is identical to the AE-4 1964 model presented previous. The model, however, has not previously been issued in computer form. AE-4 1964 is based upon satellite data, while the inner zone solar minimum model AE-5 1975 Projected consists entirely of extrapolations from AE-5 1967. While the two components of the solar minimum model have epochs 11 years part, it is assumed that any differences between the successive solar minima are smaller than the model error, and the complete model is associated with an epoch of 1975.

Anisotropic detector system for the measurement of gamma-ray source position

Detection efficiencies of cylindrical detectors for various gamma ray photon angular distributions in the energy range from .10 MeV to 15 MeV are studied. It was found that a properly chosen cylindrical crystal can produce a significantly modulated count rate as a function of angle when rotated in the anisotropic flux, The studies further indicate that simple detector systems can be used on small satellites for the determination of a gamma ray source position. Results are outlined and extended to examine source resolution angles for a practical size detector.

Shaped scintillation detector systems for measurements of gamma ray flux anisotropy

The detection efficiencies of cylindrical detectors for various gamma ray photon angular distributions were studied in the energy range from .10 Mev to 15 Mev. These studies indicate that simple detector systems on small satellites can be used to measure flux anisotropy of cosmic gamma rays and the angular distribution of albedo gamma rays produced in planetary atmospheres. The results indicate that flat cylindrical detectors are most suitable for measuring flux anisotropy because of their angular response function. A general method for calculating detection efficiencies for such detectors is presented.

A model environment for outer zone electrons

A brief morphology of outer zone electrons is given to illustrate the nature of the phenomena that we are attempting to model. This is followed by a discussion of the data processing that was done with the various data received from the experimenters before incorporating it into the data base from which this model was ultimately derived. The details of the derivation are given, and several comparisons of the final model with the various experimental measurements are presented.

The use of the inner zone electron model AE-5 and associated computer programs

A users guide to the inner radiation zone electron model AE-5 is introduced. The guide covers a description of the model, the forms in which it is available, directions on how to use the model, and a discussion of its limitations. Computer programs MODEL and ORP are described. These are major programs needed to use the electron models AE-4 and AE-5 and the smoothed proton models.

The inner zone electron model AE-5

A description is given of the work performed in the development of the inner radiation zone electron model, AE-5. A complete description of the omnidirectional flux model is given for energy thresholds E sub T in the range 4.0 E sub T/(MeV) 0.04 and for L values in the range 2.8 L 1.2 for an epoch of October 1967. Confidence codes for certain regions of B-L space and certain energies are given based on data coverage and the assumptions made in the analysis. The electron model programs that can be supplied to a user are referred to. One of these, a program for accessing the model flux at arbitrary points in B-L space and arbitrary energies, includes the latest outer zone electron model and proton model. The model AE-5, is based on data from five satellites, OGO 1, OGO 3, 1963-38C, OV3-3, and Explorer 26, spanning the period December 1964 to December 1967.

Magnetospheric particle populations.

Significant results of magnetospheric charged particle measurements conducted within the past two years are reviewed in an attempt to provide a general description of relationships among particle populations in the magnetosheath, plasma sheet, extraterrestrial ring current region, electron trough, pseudotrapping region, and stable-trapping region. Special attention is given to the characteristics of protons, electrons, alpha particles, and particles with charge greater than three in the stable trapping region.
