Steady Laminar Flame for 1-Step Thermal Decomposition Model of PBX 9501

We have recently developed a new 1-step thermal decomposition model of PBX 9501 high explosive. In this report, we examine the behavior of the model in 1-D steady laminar flame calculations. In particular, the dependencies of the steady laminar flame velocity on initial pressure, thermal conductivies and parameters of the thermal decomposition model are investigated. The results of our numerical calculations are compared to available experimental data.

REYNO: A Reactive Hydrodynamics Modeling Suite

REYNO is a Python library that is primarily designed as a platform for the agile development and testing of novel reactive flow models. Equations of state and multi-step rate laws can be implemented using the provided class hierarchy with different thermodynamic closure conditions. The library includes a one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrodynamic solver to simulate multi-material reactive or inert problems in planar, cylindrical, or spherical coordinates. Custom time-dependent boundary conditions are also available for problems such as ramp compression. This document describes the different numerical methods and algorithms that are included in REYNO.

Calibration of Single-Crystal TATB EOS

An equation of state (EOS) for the single-crystal TATB (C 6 H 6 N 6 O 6 , molar mass 258.15 g/mol) is calibrated using the experimental/computational calibration data uploaded to the caldata repository. The thermodynamically complete EOS is given by the Helmholtz free energy as a single-valued almost analytical function of the specific volume and temperature. The cold curve is taken to be of the MACAW form. The vibrational contribution to the Helmholtz free energy is described by a weighted sum of three Debye oscillators in the quasi-harmonic approximation. The calibration data suggests the range of reliable applicability of the EOS from the ambient conditions to temperatures of ∼ 3000 K and pressures of ∼ 50-70 GPa.

Notes on Davis EOS: Historical Perspective, Derivations & Physical Considerations

Davis reactant and product semi-empirical EOS have been introduced in a series of publications by W. C. Davis. These EOS are convenient to use in conjunction with reactive burn models to parameterize the thermodynamic response of quiescent high explosives (HE) and the mixture of HE decomposition products. There is a history of development of these EOS with different formulae and functional forms found in different papers. The goal of the present notes is to track that history, clarify the physical motivation behind various modifications to Davis EOS over time, and collect all the relevant formulae in one place.
