An ammonia-based aeration controller (ABAC) is being developed in the form of a model predictive controller (MPC) at the HRSD Nansemond Treatment Plant. The project integrates the following concepts: machine learning, digital twin, ABAC and MPC.
Hybrid models are powerful predictors of performance in Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs). When used in controllers, hybrid models can help inform manipulated variable setpoints in feedforward controllers. This idea was tested for chlorine disinfection and ammonia-based aeration control.
Digital twins can be mechanistic biological process models that when regularly calibrated give an indication of nitrifier kinetics and nitrifier population. Having such information can inform waste rates and dissolved oxygen setpoints for ammonia-based aeration control.
