Interrelations for the elements of the scattering matrix

Light scattered by molecules and particulate matter in planetary atmospheres was analyzed. The 4x4 scattering matrix that transforms the Stokes parameters of the incident beam into those of the scattered beam is discussed. Elementary methods are described to obtain interrelations for the 16 elements of the scattering matrix, when light is scattered by a particle of arbitrary size, shape and composition or by a collection of such particles. The implications of the results for the interpretation of polarimetric data of planets with an atmosphere are outlined.

Hybrid methods are helpful

Multiple scattering problems in a plane layer often permit the convenient use of different methods joined together. Sample numerical results to illustrate this point refer to X- and Y-functions, asymptotic fitting, the small-loss approximations, polarization in high orders, and photon path distribution.

Multiple scattering in cloud layers; some results

Theoretical methods are discussed for calculating radiative effects of aerosols. Experimental determination is emphasized for relevant aerosol parameters on a global basis to arrive at realistic estimates of heating and cooling. Internal radiation fields in very thin and very thick slabs are reviewed. Phase functions, polarization, emission by internal sources, and path length distribution are also considered.
