Infrared spectrum of the complex of formaldehyde with carbon dioxide in argon and nitrogen matrices

The complex of formaldehyde with carbon dioxide has been studied by infrared spectroscopy in argon and nitrogen matrices. The shifts relative to the free species show that the complex is weak and similar in argon and nitrogen. The results give evidence for T-shaped complexes, which are isolated in several configurations. Some evidence is also presented which indicates that, in addition to the two well-known sites in argon, carbon dioxide can be trapped in a third site.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the diffuse interstellar bands

The profiles, widths and positions of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIB's) are discussed. It is shown that the carriers of the DIB's are molecular rather than impurities in grains. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) are attractive candidates for the DIB's, in view of their likely abundance, their extreme stability, and the fact that these molecules, and their corresponding radicals, show visible transitions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the diffuse interstellar bands

This paper discusses some of the thermodynamic and spectroscopic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which make them attractive candidates as carriers of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs). It is pointed out that, in the diffuse medium, many of these species will be partially hydrogenated and positively charged, and will absorb in the visible. The observed lineshapes and widths of the DIBs can be explained by rovibronic band contours and linebroadening due to internal conversion. Since little information is available concerning the spectroscopic properties of such species in the gas phase, a considerable amount of laboratory and theoretical work is needed.

Laboratory identification of the emission features near 3.5 microns in the pre-main sequence star HD 97048

This paper presents the results of a laboratory study of formaldehyde (H2CO) suspended in low temperature molecular matrices with compositions similar to what may be found in the 'dirty ice' mantles of grains. It is shown that the emission features near 3.5 microns in the pre-main-sequence star HD 97048 can be matched by a mixture of chemical complexes of H2CO with surrounding molecules in the grain. Furthermore, a discussion is presented of various possible excitation mechanisms for this emission. The conclusion is, that for the features near 3.5 microns in HD 97048, UV pumped IR fluorescence is the most likely mechanism.
