Stream Lifetimes Against Planetary Encounters

We study, both analytically and numerically, the perturbation induced by an encounter with a planet on a meteoroid stream. Our analytical tool is the extension of pik s theory of close encounters, that we apply to streams described by geocentric variables. The resulting formulae are used to compute the rate at which a stream is dispersed by planetary encounters into the sporadic background. We have verified the accuracy of the analytical model using a numerical test.

Quantifying the risk posed by potential Earth impacts

Predictions of future potential Earth impacts by near-Earth objects (NEOs) have become commonplace in recent years, and the rate of these detections is likely to accelerate as asteroid survey efforts continue to mature. In this paper we describe the metrics introduced, and we give numerous examples of their application. This enables us to establish in rough terms the levels at which events become interesting to various parties.

Cometary orbital evolution in the outer planetary region

Numerical integrations of fictitious objects are carried out in order to elucidate the dynamical behavior of potential short-period comets when they move in orbits at distances from the Sun comparable to those of Uranus and Neptune. As in the case of observed short-period comets, close encounters with the planets play a major role for the orbital evolution, and this is especially true for encounters with initial orbits nearly tangent to that of the planet. A comparison with integrations in which the planetary masses are larger by a factor 10 shows that, in the latter case, the orbital evolution is greatly accelerated, but the dynamical paths in phase space followed by the comets are altered.

Planetary accretion rates - Analytical derivation

New analytical formulae that are valid even in cases where Keplerian shear determines the approach velocity in planetary accretion rates are presently shown to accurately reproduce Monte Carlo study results. The formulae yield accretion rates over a great variety of planet formation-conducive conditions. Since the absolute values of impact rates yielded by the formulae were expected to have factor-of-2-to-3 uncertainties, the good agreement with Monte Carlo experiments obtained suggests the reasonableness of many of the estimates adopted, or the mutual cancelling-out of various uncertainties.

Identification of asteroid dynamical families

Problems involved in the identification of asteroid dynamical families are discussed, and some methodological guidelines are presented. Asteroid family classifications are reviewed, and differences in the existing classifications are examined with special attention given to the effects of observational selection on the classification of family membership. The paper also discusses various theories of secular perturbations, including the classical linear theory, the theory of Williams (1969), and the higher order/degree theory of Yuasa (1973).

Outcomes of planetary close encounters - A systematic comparison of methodologies

Several methods for estimating the outcomes of close planetary encounters are compared on the basis of the numerical integration of a range of encounter types. An attempt is made to lay the foundation for the development of predictive rules concerning the encounter outcomes applicable to the refinement of the statistical mechanics that apply to planet-formation and similar problems concerning planetary swarms. Attention is given to Oepik's (1976) formulation of the two-body approximation, whose predicted motion differs from the correct three-body behavior.
