Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Native Defects Hybridization and Electronic Transport in Cu 2 Se–CuGaSe 2 Hierarchical Composites

Engineering the energy distribution of electronic defects in semiconductors can afford the coexistence of degenerate and nondegenerate transport behavior. By leveraging native defects in Cu 2 Se and CuGaSe 2 phases, the tunability of the concentration and energy distribution of active electronic defects in hierarchical (1-x)Cu 2 Se-(x)CuGaSe 2 composites is demonstrated. This study found that the electrical conductivity of various composites decreases with rising temperature indicating degenerate semiconducting behavior, whereas the carrier density increases with temperature, which is consistent with non-degenerate semiconductivity. Remarkably, this study found that while the carrier density and electrical conductivity drop with the increasing CuGaSe 2 content for samples with x ≤ 0.45 is consistent with an increase in the activation energy of “active” electronic defects, the sudden increase by 140% in the electrical conductivity and by 109% in the carrier density for near equimolar composition suggests the formation of a large density of electronic defects with lower activation energy. This unusual behavior is understood within the context of the hybridization of coexisting native electronic defects to form degenerate hybrid acceptor states with lower activation energy. The reported unique electronic transport can be leveraged for the development of more versatile electronic and optoelectronic devices with superior performance.

Roadmap on energy harvesting materials

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Influence of local symmetry on lattice dynamics coupled to topological surface states

Herein we investigate coupled electron-lattice dynamics in the topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 with time-resolved photoemission and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. It is well established that coherent phonons can be launched by optical excitation, but selection rules generally restrict these modes to zone-center wave vectors and Raman-active branches. We find that the topological surface state couples to additional modes, including a continuum of surface-projected bulk modes from both Raman and infrared branches, with possible contributions from surface-localized modes when they exist. Our calculations show that this surface vibrational spectrum occurs naturally as a consequence of the translational and inversion symmetries broken at the surface, without requiring the splitting-off of surface-localized phonon modes. The generality of this result suggests that coherent phonon spectra are useful by providing unique fingerprints for identifying surface states in more controversial materials. These effects may also expand the phase space for tailoring surface state wave functions via ultrafast optical excitation.

Carrier Mobility Modulation in Cu 2 Se Composites Using Coherent Cu 4 TiSe 4 Inclusions Leads to Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance

Carrier transport engineering in bulk semiconductors using inclusion phases often results in the deterioration of carrier mobility (μ) owing to enhanced carrier scattering at phase boundaries. Here, we show by leveraging the temperature-induced structural transition between the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se polymorphs that the incorporation of Cu 4 TiSe 4 inclusions within the Cu 2 Se matrix results in a gradual large drop in the carrier mobility at temperatures below 400 K (α-Cu 2 Se), whereas the carrier mobility remains unchanged at higher temperatures, where the β-Cu 2 Se polymorph dominates. The sharp discrepancy in the electronic transport within the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se matrices is associated with the formation of incoherent α-Cu 2 Se/Cu 4 TiSe 4 interfaces, owing to the difference in their atomic structures and lattice parameters, which results in enhanced carrier scattering. In contrast, the similarity of the Se sublattices between β-Cu 2 Se and Cu 4 TiSe 4 gives rise to coherent phase boundaries and good band alignment, which promote carrier transport across the interfaces. Interestingly, the different cation arrangements in Cu 4 TiSe 4 and β-Cu 2 Se contribute to enhanced phonon scattering at the interfaces, which leads to a reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity. The large reduction in the total thermal conductivity while preserving the high power factor of β-Cu 2 Se in the (1–x)Cu 2 Se/(x)Cu 4 TiSe 4 composites results in an improved ZT of 1.2 at 850 K, with an average ZT of 0.84 (500–850 K) for the composite with x = 0.01. Furthermore, this work highlights the importance of structural similarity between the matrix and inclusions when designing thermoelectric materials with improved energy conversion efficiency.

Low-temperature thermal properties of Fe-doped Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

Recent studies on Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 usually focus on its electrical and magnetic behaviors as it is a Weyl semimetal, half metal, and anisotropic ferromagnet at the same time. Only a few works looked into its low-temperature thermal characteristics. Here, in this study, we report the low-temperature heat capacity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of Fe-doped Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , as well as the formation energies, band structures, and spin-polarized density of states calculated by using the spin-polarized relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker – Green’s function method (sprKKR). The heat capacity data reveal that the sample with a heavier Fe-doping level has a lower Debye temperature and a larger density of states at the Fermi level, the latter confirmed by our ab initio computational results. The Fe-doping increases the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient at temperatures above 120 K and dramatically suppresses the thermal conductivity. Furthermore, we discuss how the external applied magnetic field affects the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of pristine Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 . Our findings provide a detailed reference and may stimulate future investigations into the low-temperature thermal transport properties of Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 and other compounds in the shandite family.
