Development and test of a large-aperture Nb3Sn cos-theta dipole coil with stress management

The stress-managed cos-theta (SMCT) coil is a new concept which was proposed and is being developed at Fermilab in the framework of US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) for high-field and/or large-aperture accelerator magnets based on low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. A 120-mm aperture two-layer Nb3Sn SMCT dipole coil has been developed at Fermilab to demonstrate and test the SMCT concept including coil design, fabrication technology and performance. The first SMCT demo coil was fabricated and assembled with 60-mm aperture Nb3Sn coil inside a dipole mirror configuration and tested separately and in series with the insert coil. This paper summarizes the design, parameters, and quench performance of the 120-mm aperture SMCT coil in a dipole mirror configuration.

A new ductile, tougher resin for impregnation of superconducting magnets

A major remaining challenge for Nb 3 Sn high field magnets is their training due to random temperature variations in the coils. The main objective of our research is to reduce or eliminate it by finding novel impregnation materials in replacement of the epoxies currently used. An organic olefin-based thermosetting dicyclopentadiene resin, C 10 H 12 , commercially available in Japan as TELENE® by RIMTEC, was used to impregnate a short Nb 3 Sn undulator coil developed by ANL and FNAL. This magnet reached short sample limit after only two quenches, compared with ∼100 when CTD-101K® was used. Ductility, i.e. the ability to accept large strains, and toughness were identified as key properties to achieve these results. In addition, we have been investigating whether mixing TELENE with high heat capacity ceramic powders such as Gd 2 O 3 , Gd 2 O 2 S, and HoCu 2 , increases the specific heat (C p ) of impregnated Nb3Sn superconducting magnets. The viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and other physical properties of TELENE with high-C p powder fillers were measured in this study as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The TELENE-87 wt%Gd 2 O 2 S had a peak in C p between 4.3 K and 5.3 K at fields between 0 and 8 T. We have also investigated the effect on the mechanical properties of pure and mixed TELENE under 10 MGy of gamma ray irradiation at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute in Takasaki, Japan. TELENE-87 wt%Gd 2 O 2 S exhibited exceptional radiation resistance. Impregnating an undulator coil with TELENE mixed with Gd 2 O 2 S powder will verify whether the coils' thermal stability further improves, or whether its low diffusivity will require engineering the material with high-thermal conductivity components. Short magnet training will lead to better magnet reliability, lower magnet margins, lower risk and substantial saving in accelerators' commissioning costs. Part of this study is supported by the U.S.-Japan Science and Technology Cooperation Program in high energy physics operated by MEXT in Japan and DOE in the U.S.

HTS Dipole Magnet With Mechanical Energy Transfer in the Magnetic Field

Several high-temperature superconducting (HTS) model magnets for particle accelerators were designed and successfully tested at Fermilab. Some worked in a persistent current mode by continuously generating magnetic fields in the iron-dominated magnet gap. This paper investigated a novel HTS dipole magnet concept with a mechanical energy transfer in the magnetic field. To pump the energy in the superconducting HTS dipole magnet, a detachable magnetizer was used. The HTS dipole magnet was built and successfully tested at a liquid nitrogen temperature. We discuss the magnet design, test results, the proposed approach limits, and efficiency.

Development of a Bi2212 Dipole Insert at Fermilab

A goal of the U.S. Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) is high-field magnets for accelerators with magnetic fields larger than 15 T, i.e., above the limits of Nb 3 Sn accelerator magnets. Composite round wires and Rutherford cables made of high temperature superconductor Bi2212 may achieve this goal. Bi2212 is sensitive to transverse stresses and strains, and this requires stress management in the coil design. A stress management approach was developed at Fermilab for high-field large-aperture Nb 3 Sn accelerator magnets. Now it is being applied to high-field dipole insert coils based on Bi2212 Rutherford cable. Here this paper describes the insert coil design and main parameters, including the superconducting wire and cable. The coil will be installed inside a 60-mm bore Nb 3 Sn dipole outsert coil and cold iron yoke. The Bi2212 coil will be tested individually and in series with the Nb 3 Sn outsert coil. The expected Bi2212 insert test parameters are reported and discussed.

Challenges and Lessons Learned From Fabrication, Testing, and Analysis of Eight MQXFA Low Beta Quadrupole Magnets for HL-LHC

By the end of October 2022, the US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) had completed fabrication of ten MQXFA magnets and tested eight of them. The MQXFA magnets are the low-beta quadrupole magnets to be used in the Q1 and Q3 Inner Triplet elements of the High Luminosity LHC. This AUP effort is shared by BNL, Fermilab, and LBNL, with strand verification tests at NHMFL. An important step of the AUP QA plan is the testing of MQXFA magnets in a vertical cryostat at BNL. The acceptance criteria that could be tested at BNL were all met by the first four production magnets (MQXFA03-MQXFA06). Subsequently, two magnets (MQXFA07 and MQXFA08) did not meet some of the criteria and were disassembled. Furthermore, lessons learned during the disassembly of MQXFA07 caused a revision to the assembly specifications that were used for MQXFA10 and subsequent magnets. In this article, we present a summary of 1) the fabrication and test data for all the MQXFA magnets; 2) the analysis of MQXFA07/A08 test results with characterization of the limiting mechanism; 3) the outcome of the investigation, including the lessons learned during MQXFA07 disassembly; and 4) the finite element analysis correlating observations with test performance.

Design and Assembly of a Large-Aperture Nb 3 Sn Cos-Theta Dipole Coil With Stress Management in Dipole Mirror Configuration

The stress-management cos-theta (SMCT) coil is a new concept which has been proposed and is being developed at Fermilab in the framework of US Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) for high-field and/or large-aperture accelerator magnets based on low-temperature and high-temperature superconductors. The SMCT structure is used to reduce large coil deformations under the Lorentz forces and, thus, the excessively large strains and stresses in the coil. A large-aperture Nb 3 Sn SMCT dipole coil has been developed and fabricated at Fermilab to demonstrate and test the SMCT concept including coil design, fabrication technology and performance. The first SMCT coil has been assembled with 60-mm aperture Nb 3 Sn coil inside a dipole mirror configuration and will be tested separately and in series with the insert coil. Here this paper summarizes the large-aperture SMCT coil design and parameters and reports the coil fabrication steps and its assembly in dipole mirror configuration.

Development of a 120-mm Aperture Nb 3 Sn Dipole Coil With Stress Management

This paper describes a 120-mm aperture 2-layer dipole coil with stress management (SM) developed at Fermilab based on cos-theta coil geometry. A model of the coil support structure made of plastic was printed using additive manufacturing technology and used for practice coil winding. The real coil support structure was printed using the 316 stainless steel. The results of the SM structure size control and the key coil fabrication steps are reported in the paper. Finally, the design of coil SM structure and the coil FEA in the dipole mirror test configurations are presented and discussed.

Design, Construction, and Testing of 0.5-m, 18-mm Period Nb 3 Sn Superconducting Undulator Magnets

We report design and fabrication of a new Nb 3 Sn-based superconducting undulator (SCU) are underway at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) of Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with Fermilab and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. To develop a robust and reliable fabrication process, the magnet development consists of several steps. First, magnetic and mechanical simulations were performed to optimize the magnet design; then, the design matured further by fabricating and testing a series of very short prototypes, ~8 cm long with a period length of 18 mm. These short prototype studies were previously reported. Second, the design was scaled to an intermediate length of ~0.5 m. These two steps led to the final design of ~1.1–m-long magnets, which are currently being fabricated. The quench behavior of each 0.5-m-long undulator magnet, as well as undulator assemblies from these magnets, was studied. The first SCU magnet assembly did not meet the design specifications due to the breakdown of the insulation. With an improved design and fabrication process based on lessons learned, the second SCU assembly achieved the design undulator field of 1.2 T. The design was further optimized, and the third set of magnets was fabricated and successfully tested.

MDPCT1 Quench Data and Performance Analysis

MDPCT1 is a four-layer cos-theta Nb3Sn dipole demonstrator developed and tested at FNAL in the framework of the U.S. Magnet Development Program. The magnet reached record fields for accelerator magnets of 14.1 T at 4.5 K in the first test and 14.5 T at 1.9 K in the second test and then showed large degradation. While its inner coils performed exceptionally well with only two quenches up to 14.5 T and no evidence of degradation, the outer coils degraded over the course of testing. By adopting new measurement and analysis techniques at FNAL we are discussing in detail what happened. Both success and failure in our diagnostics are discussed. The evolution of techniques over the course of two tests (and three thermal cycles) shows the path to address challenges brought by the first four-layer magnet tested at FNAL. This paper presents the analysis of quench data along with diagnostic features and complementary measurements taken in support of the magnet performance analysis.

HTS Dipole Magnet Model for the Persistent Current Operation

Recent advances in the fabrication of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils allow the design of superconducting accelerator magnets that work in a persistent current mode. Many various, rather low-field magnets in particle accelerators operate in the DC current mode. Fermilab designed, fabricated, and tested an HTS dipole magnet model that has 20-mm air gap and a magnetic field up to 0.5 T. The magnet has a primary copper coil that for a short period pumps the energy in the short-circuited secondary HTS coil. Here, the current paper presents the design, fabrication, and testing of this magnet at liquid-nitrogen temperature.
