Updating prediction models by dynamical relaxation - An examination of the technique

A dynamical relaxation technique for updating prediction models is analyzed with the help of the linear and nonlinear barotropic primitive equations. It is assumed that a complete four-dimensional time history of some prescribed subset of the meteorological variables is known. The rate of adaptation of the flow variables toward the true state is determined for a linearized f-model, and for mid-latitude and equatorial beta-plane models. The results of the analysis are corroborated by numerical experiments with the nonlinear shallow-water equations.

NASA's atmospheric variability experiments /AVE/

A series of seven mesoscale experiments were conducted under the NASA program, Atmospheric Variability Experiments (AVE). Rawinsonde, satellite, aircraft, and ground observations were recorded during specially selected meteorological periods lasting from 1 to 3 days. Details are presented for each AVE relative to observation times, experiment size and location, and significant weather. Some research results based on the use of these AVE data are referenced. These include contributions to regional numerical prediction; relations between wind shears, instability, and thunderstorm motion and development; relations between moisture and temperature and the probability of convection; retrieval of tropospheric temperature profiles from cloud-contaminated satellite data; variation of convection intensity as a result of atmospheric variability; and effects of cloud rotation on their trajectories.

Adaptation of a general circulation model to ocean dynamics

A primitive-variable general circulation model of the ocean was formulated in which fast external gravity waves are suppressed with rigid-lid surface constraint pressires which also provide a means for simulating the effects of large-scale free-surface topography. The surface pressure method is simpler to apply than the conventional stream function models, and the resulting model can be applied to both global ocean and limited region situations. Strengths and weaknesses of the model are also presented.

Calculation of wind-driven surface currents in the North Atlantic Ocean

Calculations to simulate the wind driven near surface currents of the North Atlantic Ocean are described. The primitive equations were integrated on a finite difference grid with a horizontal resolution of 2.5 deg in longitude and latitude. The model ocean was homogeneous with a uniform depth of 100 m and with five levels in the vertical direction. A form of the rigid-lid approximation was applied. Generally, the computed surface current patterns agreed with observed currents. The development of a subsurface equatorial countercurrent was observed.

Spectral reflectance and radiance characteristics of water pollutants

Spectral reflectance characteristics of water pollutants and water bodies were compiled using the existing literature. Radiance calculations were performed at satellite altitude for selected illumination angles and atmospheric conditions. The work described in this report was limited to the reflective portion of the spectrum between 0.40 micrometer to 1.0 micrometer.

Investigation of earth's albedo using Skylab data

The author has identified the following significant results. Specific test sites in the White Sands, New Mexico and Lake Michigan areas were chosen because of their stability and known reflectances. Skylab S192 multispectral data and ERIM aircraft multispectral data were collected for these sites and were compared with results of atmospheric radiative transfer calculations in order to determine the aerosol content of the atmosphere. The spectral shape of the Skylab data compared quite favorably with the nearly simultaneous spectral character of the aircraft data. Although there were difficulties in the calibration of the S192 instrument which remain unresolved, interesting mathematical and physical relationships were discovered.

The influence of the diabatic heating in the troposphere on the stratosphere

In order to simulate the seasonal variation of the stratospheric circulation in a zonal mean circulation model, a Newtonian heating function and a detailed heating function were applied to the troposphere and stratosphere, respectively. The purpose of this study was to investigate the response of stratospheric circulation to alterations of the radiative equilibrium temperature of the troposphere.

A numerical study of the radiative-dynamic interaction in the stratosphere by a time-dependent zonal mean circulation model

The response of a zonal mean circulation model was compared to different heating functions used to simulate the interannual climate cycle. Two heating functions were used: A simple Newtonian heating function and a sophisticated heating function (Ramanathan, 1976). The emphasis was on the coupling between radiative transfer and the circulation in the stratosphere. The model was formulated in terms of primitive equations with 10 deg latitudinal resolution and 18 levels in pressure. Eddy transport of heat in the stratosphere was treated by the Reed and German (1965) formulation, while Stone's (1973) formulation is used in the troposphere. Momentum eddy fluxes are specified by climate statistics after Harwood and Pyle (1975). The model dynamics resulting from the two runs are compared to demonstrate the benefits of using detailed heating functions.

Pressure Contact Sounding Data for NASA's Atmospheric Variability Experiment (AVE 3)

The basic rawinsonde data are described at each pressure contact from the surface to sounding termination for the 41 stations participating in the AVE III measurement program that began at 0000 GMT on February 6 and ended at 1200 GMT on February 7, 1975. Soundings were taken at 3-hour intervals during a large period of the experiment from most stations within the United States east of about 105 degrees west longitude. Methods of data processing, change in reduction scheme since the AVE II pilot experiment, and data accuracy are briefly discussed. An example of contact data is presented, and microfiche cards of all the contact data are included in the appendix. The AVE III project was conducted to better understand and establish the extent of applications for meteorological satellite sensor data through correlative ground truth experiments and to provide basic experimental data for use in studies of atmospheric scales of-motion interrelationships.

A generalized tensor formulation of atmosphere and seas dynamics

A generalized mathematical model was developed for simulation of the dynamics and transport of both the atmosphere and seas. A nearly horizontal bottom coordinate surface conforms to the land-to-air interface and the sea-floor-to-water interface, which simplifies computations. General vertical motion of the other quasi-horizontal coordinate surfaces is allowed; external gravity waves can be represented by the top coordinate surface, and meteorological fronts and inversion layers in the atmosphere and refractive layers in the seas can be represented with enhanced resolution by the internal quasi-horizontal coordinate surfaces. A tensor reformulation of the standard subgrid mixing theory departs significantly from the standard theory in allowing, as a solution under adiabatic conditions, rigid-body rotation of the atmosphere.
