A mesoscopic device for a realization of the topological Kondo effect

The search for anyons is a field of immense interest owing to its potential application in the field of quantum information. Quantum critical Kondo impurities constitute one possible platform for their realization and topological Kondo effect (TKE) by virtue of remaining critical in the presence of perturbations, seems to be especially promising in this regard. In this paper we discuss practical steps for a realization of TKE with a relatively high Kondo temperature $\mathbf{T}$ k . Its central feature is the so-called Majorana-Cooper box (MCB) and we argue that a particular type of iron-based topological superconductor is especially suitable for realization of TKE. Once MCB is available one needs to connect it to external metallic leads to produce TKE. A relatively high value of the Kondo temperature $\mathbf{T}$ k is then aided by a large superconducting gap of the iron-based superconductor. We give estimates for $\mathbf{T}$ k , for the cases of both isotropic and anisotropic exchange couplings of MCB with the leads.

Spin frustration and an exotic critical point in ferromagnets from nonuniform opposite g factors

Here, it is demonstrated that novel spin frustration can be induced in ferromagnets with nonuniform opposite Landé g-factors. The frustrated state is characterized by a mutual interplay of typical ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) features, such as the zero-field susceptibility being FM-like at low temperatures but AF-like at high temperatures. It is also found to contain an exotic zero-temperature 'half fire, half ice' critical point at which the spins on one sublattice are fully disordered and on the other one are fully ordered. We suggest that such frustration may occur in a number of copper-iridium oxides such as Sr 3 CuIrO 6 . We also anticipate a realization of the frustration and 'partial fire, partial ice' states in certain antiferromagnets, lattice gas, and neuron systems.

Topological quantum computation on a chiral Kondo chain

We describe the chiral Kondo chain model based on the symplectic Kondo effect and demonstrate that it has a quantum critical ground state populated by non-Abelian anyons. We show that the fusion channel of two arbitrary anyons can be detected by locally coupling the two anyons to an extra single channel of chiral current and measuring the corresponding conductance at a finite frequency. Based on such measurements, we propose that the chiral Kondo chain model with symplectic symmetry can be used for the implementation of measurement-only topological quantum computations, and it possesses several distinct features favorable for such applications. Furthermore, the sources and effects of errors in the proposed system are analyzed and possible material realizations are discussed.

Symmetric Kondo Lattice States in Doped Strained Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We use the topological heavy fermion (THF) model and its Kondo lattice (KL) formulation to study the possibility of a symmetric Kondo (SK) state in twisted bilayer graphene. Via a large-N approximation, we find a SK state in the KL model at fillings v = 0,±1,±2 where a KL model can be constructed. In the SK state, all symmetries are preserved and the local moments are Kondo screened by the conduction electrons. At the mean-field level of the THF model at v = 0,±1,±2,±3 we also find a similar symmetric state that is adiabatically connected to the symmetric Kondo state. We study the stability of the symmetric state by comparing its energy with the ordered (symmetry-breaking) states found in [H. Hu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 026502 (2023)., Z.-D. Song and B. A. Bernevig, Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022).] and find the ordered states to have lower energy at v = 0,±1,±2. However, moving away from integer fillings by doping the light bands, our mean-field calculations find the energy difference between the ordered state and the symmetric state to be reduced, which suggests the loss of ordering and a tendency toward Kondo screening. In order to include many-body effects beyond the mean-field approximation, we also performed dynamical mean-field theory calculations on the THF model in the nonordered phase. The spin susceptibility follows a Curie behavior at v = 0,±1,±2 down to ~2 K where the onset of screening of the local moment becomes visible. This hints to very low Kondo temperatures at these fillings, in agreement with the outcome of our mean-field calculations. At noninteger filling v = ±0.5,±0.8,±1.2 dynamical mean-field theory shows deviations from a 1/T susceptibility at much higher temperatures, suggesting a more effective screening of local moments with doping. Lastly, we study the effect of a C 3⁢z -rotational-symmetry-breaking strain via mean-field approaches and find that a symmetric phase (that only breaks C 3⁢z symmetry) can be stabilized at sufficiently large strain at v = 0,±1,±2. Our results suggest that a symmetric Kondo phase is strongly suppressed at integer fillings, but could be stabilized either at noninteger fillings or by applying strain.

Tractable model of a pair density wave

Here, this Letter describes a simple mechanism for superconducting pairing with finite wave vector (pair density wave) based on weak coupling. The mechanism is illustrated with a quasi-one-dimensional model relevant to certain a class of quasi-one-dimensional materials. Within this model, pair and charge density wave order parameters are intertwined emerging as components of the same matrix field and are related by particle-hole symmetry.

Analytic calculation of the vison gap in the Kitaev spin liquid

Although the ground-state energy of the Kitaev spin liquid can be calculated exactly, the associated vison gap energy has to date only been calculated numerically from finite size diagonalization. Here we show that the phase shift for scattering Majorana fermions off a single bond-flip can be calculated analytically, leading to a closed-form expression for the vison gap energy Δ = 0.2633 J . Generalizations of our approach can be applied to Kitaev spin liquids on more complex lattices such as the three dimensional hyper-octagonal lattice.

Charge density wave fluctuation driven composite order in layered kagome metals

The newly discovered kagome metals AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) offer an exciting route to study exotic phases arising due to interplay between electronic correlations and topology. Besides superconductivity, these materials exhibit a charge-density wave (CDW) phase occurring at ~ 100 K, whose origin still remains elusive. The robust multi-component 2 × 2 CDW phase in these systems is of great interest due to the presence of an unusually large anomalous Hall effect. In quasi-2D systems with weak inter-layer coupling fluctuation driven exotic phases may appear. In particular in systems with multi-component order parameters fluctuations may lead to establishment of composite order when only products of individual order parameters condense while the individual ones themselves remain disordered. Here we argue that such fluctuation-driven regime of composite CDW order may exist in thin films of kagome metals above the CDW transition temperature. It is suggested that the melting of the Trihexagonal state in the material doped way from the van Hove singularities gives rise to a pseudogap regime where the spectral weight is concentrated in small pockets and most of the original Fermi surface is gapped. Our findings suggest possible presence of exotic phases in the weakly coupled layered kagome metals, more so in the newly synthesized thin films of kagome metals.

Two types of superconducting pairs in stripe-ordered La 2 - x Ba x CuO 4 ( x = 1 / 8 ) : Evidence from resistivity measurements

Recent angle-resolved c-axis resistivity measurements of the stripe-ordered La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 (LBCO) with x = 1/8 revealed an unexpected dependence on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field. We argue that these and other available data for the c-axis transport point to the existence of superconducting pairs of two different types in the x = 1/8 LBCO below the stripe ordering temperature. The pairs of one type carry finite momentum and are confined to the Cu-O planes; the pairs of other type (probably the conventional d wave with zero momentum) propagate along narrow conducting channels traversing the sample in the c-axis direction. The evidence for this comes from the observed exponential temperature dependence of the c-axis resistivity ρ c (T ) which we attribute to the thermally excited slips of the superconducting phase and flux flows. We present a simple theory to fit the observed π/2-periodic dependence of ρ c on the direction of the in-plane magnetic field and the other data.

Exact solution of the topological symplectic Kondo problem

The Kondo effect is an archetypical phenomenon in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems. Recent attention has focused on the application of Kondo physics to quantum information science by exploiting overscreened Kondo impurities with residual anyon-like impurity entropy. While this physics was proposed in the fine-tuned multi-channel Kondo setup or in the Majorana-based topological Kondo effect, we here study the Kondo effect with symplectic symmetry Sp(2k) and present details about the implementation which importantly only involves conventional s-wave superconductivity coupled to an array of resonant levels and neither requires perfect channel symmetry nor Majorana fermions. Here we carefully discuss the role of perturbations and show that a global Zeeman drives the system to a 2-channel SU(k) fixed point. Exact results for the residual entropy, specific heat and magnetization are derived using the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz for Sp(2k). This solution not only proves the existence of a quantum critical ground state with anyon-like Hilbert space dimension, but also a particularly weak non-Fermi liquid behavior at criticality. We interpret the weakness of non-analyticities as a manifestation of suppressed density of states at the impurity causing only a very weak connection of putative anyons and conduction electrons. Given this weak connection, the simplicity of the design and the stability of the effect, we conjecture that the symplectic Kondo effect may be particularly suitable for quantum information applications.
