The January 10, 1997 interplanetary high-speed stream and the resultant first substorm is studied using Wind interplanetary data and Polar UV images, respectively.
Charged particle interactions with magnetic field magnitude changes lead to particle guiding center displacements and hence particle cross-field diffusion.
We review some of the new NASA/ESA Ulysses solar wind microscale results.
Solar wind phenomena leading to different types of geomagnetic activity are discussed.
Boundary layers are commonly encountered in space and astrophysical plasmas.
There are plasma boundary layers at the magnetopause of Juputer and the Earth.
We examine energetic particle transport at or near Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs).
Corotating interaction regions (CIRs) in the middle heliosphere have distinct morphological features and associated patterns of turbulence and energetic particles.
We use WIND solar wind data and POLAR UV imaging data to study magnetospheric responses and substorm triggering mechanisms during and after interplanetary (IP) shock events.
We study cases of abrupt dayside auroral brightenings and very fast auroral propagation using the POLAR UV imaging data.
Flying a trajectory perpendicular to the Earth-Sun line during its perihelion passage, Solar Probe will use in-situ and imaging instruments to provide the first three dimentional viewing of the corona, direct observations of solar polar regions, and local sampling of the solar environment. These primary observations are complemented by context-setting cruise measurements and Earth-based observations.
Following a brief review of out current knowledge of the solar wind and processes on the solar surface, we describe the baseline Solar Probe mission, its prime scientific objectives and its strawman instrument payload.

We review observations of nonlinear plasma waves detected by interplanetary spacecraft. For this paper we will focus primarily on the phase-steepened properties of such waves. Plasma waves at comet Giacobini-Zinner measured by the International Cometary Explorer (ICE), at comets Halley and Grigg-Skjellerup measured by Giotto, and interplanetary Alfven waves measured by Ulysses, will be discussed and intercompared.

All heliospheric current sheet (HCS) crossings and corotating solar wind streams detectedby both WIND and ULYSSES have been identified.
