(abstract) An Extensive Search for Interplanetary Slow-mode Shocks: Ulysses

Ulysses has accumulated five years of interplanetary solar wind plasma and IMF measurements. These data cover from 1 to approximately 5 AU and all the heliographic latitudes. Based on these data, we perform an extensive search for the slow-mode shocks. We find a considerable number of discontinuities that have large magnetic field magnitude changes and also large field normal components.

(abstract) Properties of Slow-mode Shocks in the Distant (>200 R(sub e)) Geomagnetic Tail

The two distant ISEE-3 geomagnetic tail passes have been examined to identify all slow-mode shocks present in the data. We find a total of 86 events from 439 plasmasheet/lobe crossings, using five criteria based on relations between the upstream lobe and the downstream plasmasheet magnetic field and plasma measurements.

Magnetic Storms

This talk provides a brief summary of the first conference devoted entirely to magnetic storms. Topics cover the relevant phenomena at the Sun/corona, propogation of these structures through interplanetary space, the response of the magnetosphere to interaction with these interplanetary structures, the formation of the storm time ring current (in particular the oxygen content of the ring-current), and storm ionospheric effects and ground based effects.

Some Options for a Minimum Solar Probe Mission

Smaller and lower cost options of NASA's Solar Probe mission have recently been studied. The difference between these options and the results of earlier studies is dramatic. The motivation for low cost has encouraged the JPL design team to accomodate a smaller scientific payload using innovative multi-functional subsystems.

Moderate Geomagnetic Storms: Interplanetary Origins and Coupling Functions (ISEE3 Data)

Geomagnetic storms are related to the ring current intensification, which is driven by energy injection primarily during energetic solar wind-magnetosphere coupling due to reconnection at the magnetopause. This work identified the interplanetary origins of moderate geomagnetic storms (-100nT is less or equal to Dst(sub peak) is less than or equal to -50 nT) and analyzed the coupling processes during the storm main phase at solar maximum (1978-1979).

Fire Under Fire: Proton Probabilities at Perihelion

This paper computes the probabilities that the near-Sun flyby mission, Fire, might be bombarded by high energy protons from solar-activity related proton acceleration lying beneath Fire's perihelion altitude of three solar radii.

Coronal Hole-Active Region-Current Sheet (CHARCS) Association with Intense Interplanetary and Geomagnetic Activity

Intense geomagnetic storms (Dst<or equal to -100nT) have been associated with interplanetary structures involving large-intensity (B(sub 3)<or equal to 10nT) and long-duration (T< or equal to 3 hours) values of the southward component of the IMF. We show that near solar maximum, the solar origin of such structures seems to be associated with active regions(flares and/or filament eruptions) ocurring close to the streamer belt and to growing low altitude coronal holes. It is also shown that such type of coronal holes had a dual-peak solar cycle distribution during solar cycle 21, similar to that previously reported for the above mentioned interplanetary and geomagnetic phenomena.

Properties of Slow-Mode Shocks in the Distant (>200 R(sub e)) Geomagnetic Tail

Two distant ISEE-3 geomagnetic tail passes have been examined to identify all slow-mode shocks present in the data. We find a total of 86 events from 439 plasmasheet/lobe crossings, using five criteria based on relations between the upstream lobe and the downstream plasmasheet magnetic field and plasma measurements. The statistical results of slow-mode shock parameters such as the angle between magnetic field and shock normal, Theta(sub bn), Alfven Mach number along the normal direction, M(sub an), and electron beta, Beta(sub e), are calculated and reported.

Interplanetary Discontinuities in Corotating Streams and Their Interaction Regions

In this study, we investigate the discontinuity properties in the low altitude corotating stream regions which are encountered during Ulyssses traveling from the south to north heliographic poles in 1995. Through the occurrence rates of directional discontinuites and tangential discontinuities, we find that there are three different regions around a high speed stream.
