Single-Tip Probe Senses Pressure Or Temperature

Single-tip probe designed for use in supersonic wind tunnel switched to sense pressure or temperature measurements nearly simultaneous at that point. Includes small valve like valves used in bicycle and automotive tires, called "Schraeder valve". Tire valve opened or closed by push rod and solenoid. In open position, flow past thermocouple enables measurements of temperature. In closed position, flow blocked and pressure in probe backs up to pressure transducer.

Screw-Thread Inserts As Temporary Flow Restrictors

Coil-spring screw-thread inserts found useful as temporary flow restrictors. Inserts placed in holes through which flow restricted, effectively reducing cross sections available for flow. Friction alone holds inserts against moderate upstream pressures. Use of coil-spring thread inserts as flow restrictors conceived as inexpensive solution to problem of adjusting flow of oxygen through orifices in faceplate into hydrogen/oxygen combustion chamber. Installation and removal of threaded inserts gentle enough not to deform orifice tubes.

Penetrable Linear-Gap Pressure Seal

Pair of opposed inflatable rubber tubes allow object to be moved between them while maintaining pressure seal. Conceived for pressurized wind tunnel into which sensor probes inserted and positioned from outside. Probe moved along seal gap, pushed inward, and/or pulled outward while different pressures maintained inside and outside tunnel. Replaces bulky sealing unit. Adaptable to other situations in which objects must penetrate pressure walls and move along them. Works as well for vacuum chambers and for pressure vessels. Also applicable to dust seals not having to withstand differential pressures.
