Control of atomic Bose – Einstein condensate with interferometric feedback probing

We consider the problem of decoherence in a Bose – Einstein condensate (BEC) of noninteracting atoms during interferometric probing with a classical monochromatic external field. The condensate is located in one of the arms of the Mach – Zehnder interferometer, while part of the radiation from the interferometer output is fed back to the input, thereby closing the coherent feedback loop. A more general setting of the problem is also considered, in which the condensate is located in a system of interferometers ‘nested’ into each other, while part of the output radiation of each of them is also fed back to its input, closing the so-called multiloop feedback. The possibility of effective control of decoherence rates of various matrix elements is shown. The application of feedback of the proposed type to BEC in a double-well potential is investigated. It is found that this feedback allows efficient control of the distribution of atoms between the wells. (paper)

Quantum geometric phase under pre- and post-selection

We consider a quantum system subjected to a controlled phase transformation and interaction with the environment in between the acts of selection, which leads to the emergence of interference effects. It is shown that the shift of the dependence of the statistics of contacts’ information with the environement on the controlled phase shift can be interpreted as a geometric phase. This interpretation is consistent with the known operational approach to the geometric phase. As a result, we suggest generalising the operational approach to the realm of pre- and post-selected quantum states. (paper)

Lambda-scheme feedback spectroscopy

We report a theoretical investigation of a control scheme of a single-Λ system in pump–probe feedback spectroscopy. The feedback controls the phase of one of the fields, and its action is triggered by a nontrivial unraveling of the quantum operation of detection of spontaneous photons emitted by an atom. Within the framework of Markovian master equations, it is shown that the shape and width of the ‘dark’ resonance of coherent population trapping can be controlled within very wide limits. In addition, sharp resonant-like structures in the field’s work dependence on the Rabi frequencies are revealed and explained. (paper)
