Recent advances in Redox flow cell storage systems

Attention is given to recent data pertaining to flow cell storage system-related features as well as the state of Redox membrane technology. In addition, the state of the technology as it relates to the two application areas of storage for photovoltaic/wind and distributed energy storage for electrical utility applications is addressed. Also covered are the cost and life advantages of Redox systems as well as a discussion of such cells as the open circuit voltage cell, the rebalance cell, and the trim cell. Finally, it is concluded that the main thrust of membrane development will be to reduce the interaction between the chloro complex of iron in the ferric state since this is the major factor in membrane area resistivity.

Electrically rechargeable REDOX flow cell

A bulk energy storage system is designed with an electrically rechargeable reduction-oxidation (REDOX) cell divided into two compartments by a membrane, each compartment containing an electrode. An anode fluid is directed through the first compartment at the same time that a cathode fluid is directed through the second compartment. Means are provided for circulating the anode and cathode fluids, and the electrodes are connected to an intermittent or non-continuous electrical source, which when operating, supplies current to a load as well as to the cell to recharge it. Ancillary circuitry is provided for disconnecting the intermittent source from the cell at prescribed times and for circulating the anode and cathode fluids according to desired parameters and conditions.

Electrically rechargeable redox flow cells

Considering the topographical and sizing requirements for a typical pumped water storage installation and the immergence of energy conversion schemes that are time dependent as to their generating capability, a closer look is being given to nonpumped water storage schemes for storing electricity. An electrochemical bulk power storage concept, which was named a rechargeable redox flow cell is described. This scheme, based on pumping a redox couple through a power conversion section, appears to offer high overall efficiency, no cycle life limitations for the electrodes, and deep discharger capability.

Electrically rechargeable redox flow cells

Considering the topographical and sizing requirements for a typical pumped water storage installation and the immergence of energy conversion schemes that are time-dependent as to their generating capability, a closer look is being given to nonpumped water storage schemes for storing electricity. An electrochemical bulk power storage concept, called a rechargeable redox flow cell, is described. This scheme, based on pumping a redox couple through a power conversion section, appears to offer high overall efficiency, no cycle life limitations for the electrodes, and deep discharge capability.

Advanced spacecraft fuel cell systems

The development and characteristics of advanced spacecraft fuel cell systems are discussed. The system is designed to operate on low pressure, propulsion grade hydrogen and oxygen. The specific goals are 10,000 hours of operation with refurbishment, 20 pounds per kilowatt at a sustained power of 7 KW, and 21 KW peaking capability for durations of two hours. The system rejects waste heat to the spacecraft cooling system at power levels up to 7 KW. At higher powers, the system automatically transfers to open cycle operation with overboard steam venting.

Advanced spacecraft fuel cell systems.

The specific goals of the system selected for development are 10,000 hours of operation with refurbishment, 20 lb/kW at a sustained power of 7 kW, and 21 kW peaking capability for durations of two hours. The system is designed to operate on low pressure, propulsion grade hydrogen and oxygen. Product water is removed by a passive water removal method that employs a porous hydrophobic membrane as a part of the water transport plate. Aspects of system component testing are discussed together with advanced materials to be used. It was found that the initial performance of a cell with a gold catalyzed cathode is superior to a cell with platinum catalyst. The problem of a certain inability to maintain the desired gas-electrolyte-catalyst interface is the main source of difficulty with the gold-based catalysts.

Advanced spacecraft fuel cell systems.

An evolutionary advanced technology program is described which is aimed at meeting the requirements of the next generation of fuel cell systems as well as providing technology fallout to ongoing mission oriented programs. The specific goals of the system selected for development are for 10,000 hr of operation with refurbishment, 20 lb/kW at a sustained power of 7 kW, and 21 kW peaking capability for durations of two hours. The system is designed to operate on low pressure propulsion grade hydrogen and oxygen.
