Advancements in Accelerator Physics and System Developments for the EIC

The development and enhancement of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) are founded on extensive research and development efforts aimed at achieving rigorous performance goals. This document outlines the crucial research and development (R&D) efforts that underpin the various systems and components of the EIC, including the polarized electron source and linear accelerator (linac) systems. Achieving the collider’s operational benchmarks relies on meticulously enhancing these components to optimize performance.

The EIC accelerator: design highlights and project status

The design of the electron-ion collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is well underway, aiming at a peak electron-proton luminosity of 10e+34 cm^-1·sec^-1. This high luminosity, the wide center-of-mass energy range from 29 to 141 GeV (e-p) and the high level of polarization require innovative solutions to maximize the performance of the machine, which makes the EIC one of the most challenging accelerator projects to date. The complexity of the EIC will be discussed, and the project status and plans will be presented.

Lattice Design of the EIC Electron Storage Ring for Energies Down to 5 GeV

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will feature an electron storage ring that will circulate polarized beams with energies up to 18 GeV. Recently a study has been undertaken to extend the minimum energy from 6 GeV to 5 GeV. As the solenoid-based spin rotators around the interaction point require specific bending angles that depend on the energy range, this change results in major changes to the geometry. Moreover, avoiding interference of the electron beamline with the other beamlines in the tunnel, as well as with the tunnel walls, is a formidable challenge, especially at the location of the large-diameter superconducting solenoids. In this contribution, the details of the modified spin rotators, geometrical layout, and optics of the revised lattice are presented.

Electron-Ion Collider Design Status

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is being designed for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Activities have been focused on beam-beam simulations, polarization studies, and beam dynamics, as well as on maturing the layout and lattice design of the constituent accelerators and the interaction region. The latest design advances will be presented.

Task Force Report: ESR Linear Lattice Design

A new layout and optics for the Electron Storage Ring (ESR) have been produced with revised spin rotators in IRs 6 and 8, a redesign of IR10, and a new geometric layout for the ring. In this report, the efforts to produce this lattice are documented, including the motivation for design decisions. This new lattice, version 5.5, will be used as the baseline for future studies.

Design Status Update of the Electron-Ion Collider

The design of the electron-ion collider EIC to be constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory has been continuously evolving towards a realistic and robust design that meets all the requirements set forth by the nuclear physics community in the White Paper. Over the past year activities have been focused on maturing the design, and on developing alternatives to mitigate risk. These include improvements of the interaction region design as well as modifications of the hadron ring vacuum system to accommodate the high average and peak beam currents. Beam dynamics studies have been performed to determine and optimize the dynamic aperture in the two collider rings and the beam-beam performance. We will present the EIC design with a focus on recent developments.

Preparation for the Beam Energy Scan II at RHIC in 2020

RHIC will provide Au-Au collisions at beam energies of 5.75, 4.59 GeV/nucleon for physics program in 2020, and at beam energy of 3.85 GeV/nucleon for physics program in 2021 as part of the BeamEnergy Scan II (BES-II). The oper- ational experience gained in the first year (2019) of BES-II operation will be applied toward operations in the coming years. This article will present some technical details and the outlook of the BES-II operations in the coming years.

Polarization Studies for the eRHIC Electron Storage Ring

A hadron/lepton collider with polarized beams has been under consideration by the scientific community since some years, in the U.S. and Europe. Among the various proposals, those by JLAB and BNL with polarized electron and proton beams are currently under closer study in the U.S. Experimenters call for the simultaneous storage of electron bunches with both spin helicity. In the BNL based Ring-Ring design, electrons are stored at top energy in a ring to be accommodated in the existing RHIC tunnel. The transversely polarized electron beam is injected into the storage ring at variable energies, between 5 and 18 GeV. Polarization is brought into the longitudinal direction at the IP by a couple of spin rotators. In this paper results of first studies of the attainable beam polarization level and lifetime in the storage ring at 18 GeV are presented.

Spin Resonance Free Electron Ring Injector

We have developed an intrinsic resonance free circular electron accelerator. This lattice could be placed in the existing RHIC tunnel and accelerate electrons from 100 MeV to 20 GeV avoiding all major polarization loss usual in such machines.

Beam energy scan with asymmetric collision at RHIC

A beam energy scan of deuteron-gold collision, with center-of-mass energy at 19.6, 39, 62.4 and 200.7 GeV/n, was performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2016 to study the threshold for quark-gluon plasma (QGP) production. The lattice, RF, stochastic cooling and other subsystems were in different configurations for the various energies. The operational challenges changed with every new energy. The operational experience at each energy, the operation performance, highlights and lessons of the beam energy scan are reviewed in this report.
