An 8-b 1.3-MHz successive-approximation A/D converter

A new successive-approximation A/D converter is described. It combines a string of equal-valued polysilicon resistors and a set of ratioed capacitors in a unique circuit configuration so that a high sampling rate is achieved. The comparator is realized by a chopper-stabilized amplifier to reduce the effect of the offset voltages of MOS amplifiers. The converter performs an 8-b monotonic conversion with a differential nonlinearity less than 1 LSB in 770 nsec. The die area is 3750 sq mil. This new conversion technique can also be utilized in a pipelined A/D converter (Temes, 1985) and enables it to achieve high speed.

A quasi-passive CMOS pipeline D/A converter

A novel pipeline digital-to-analog converter configuration, based on switched-capacitor techniques, is described. An n-bit D/A conversion can be implemented by cascading n + 1 unit cells. The device count of the circuit increases linearly, not exponentially, with the conversion accuracy. The new configuration can be pipelined. Hence, the conversion rate can be increased without requiring a higher clock rate. An experimental 10-bit DAC prototype has been fabricated using a 3-micron CMOS process. The results show that high-speed, high-accuracy, and low-power operation can be achieved without special process or postprocess trimming.

Analog MOS integrated circuits

The goal was to design single-chip lowpass filters with constant group delay in the pass band and 60 dB minimum attenuation in the stop band. The desired 3 dB frequencies are (in Hertz) 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320. A filter class that satisfies the constant delay (linear phase) requirement while providing quite a narrow transition band is the Bessel-Chebyshev filters. It was found that the 7th order Bessel-Chebyshev response satisfied the requirement of the filter.
