Minor planets and related objects. XXVII - Lightcurves of 887 Alinda

Eleven light curves and UBV photometry of the Amor asteroid Alinda, a candidate for having a cometary origin, are analyzed. A probable rotation period of 73 h 58 m + or - 3 m (p.e.) is derived on the assumption of two maxima and two minima per cycle in a composite light curve. An absolute V magnitude of 14.10 + or - 0.08 and a phase coefficient of 0.042 + or - 0.003 mag/deg in V are obtained, along with a B-V color of 0.86 + or - 0.02 and a U-B color of 0.50 + or - 0.05, both extrapolated to zero phase. The rotation period is shown to be the longest yet observed for an asteroid. It is concluded that the colors of Alinda are not unusual for an asteroid, that Alinda is probably not an extinct cometary nucleus, that the slow rotation may be a consequence of one or more collisions, and that the pole of Alinda may be nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic.

Minor planets and related objects. XXIV - Photometric observations for /5/ Astraea

Five light curves of (5) Astraea are presented along with UBV photometric results and analyses of the pole orientation, sidereal period, sense of rotation, and color coefficients. A sidereal period of 16 hr 48 min 43.60 sec (+ or - 0.03 sec) with a retrograde sense of rotation is adopted as well as a North Pole position at +9 deg (+ or 1 deg) latitude and 148 deg (+ or - 3 deg) ecliptic longitude. It is noted that an amplitude-aspect plot indicates an amplitude of the order of 0.37 magnitude for an equatorial-aspect light curve of Astraea

Minor planets and related objects. XXII - Phase functions for /6/ Hebe

Twenty-two light curves of Hebe are analyzed along with results of UBV photometry and photometric astrometry. A mean synodic period of approximately 7 hr 16 min 28.7 sec is adopted, and it is found that the amplitude of Hebe appears to vary directly with phase. The asteroid's magnitudes and colors are plotted against phase, its pole orientation is estimated, and the sidereal period is determined to be about 7 hr 16 min 28.01 sec from photometric astrometry. A color curve is plotted which shows that Hebe has a reddened region on its surface near the secondary minimum and that the asteroid is nearly spherical. Opposition effects are compared and found to be closely similar for Hebe, Ceres, Lydia, Massalia, and Vesta.

Measuring mandibular motions

Mandibular motion along three axes is measured by three motion transducers on floating yoke that rests against mandible. System includes electronics to provide variety of outputs for data display and processing. Head frame is strapped to test subject's skull to provide fixed point of reference for transducers.

Minor planets and related objects. XXI - Photometry of eight asteroids

Light curves, UBV colors, rotational periods, phase coefficients, and absolute magnitudes are presented. The asteroids studied are (1) Ceres, (4) Vesta, (16) Psyche, (78) Diana, (281) Lucretia, (451) Patientia, (1212) Francette, and (1362) Griqua. The rotation axis of Lucretia is nearly perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. Ceres appears to be nearly spherical with an absolute magnitude of B(1,0)=4.42, which is 0.3 mag fainter than previously reported. The determination of the absolute magnitude for an asteroid depends on its aspect, and for each opposition there is, therefore, a different absolute magnitude.

ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment

The Ohio State University participation in the ATS-6 Millimeter Wavelength Propagation Experiment is summarized. Attenuation was measured simultaneously at 20 and 30 GHz on earth space propagation paths to two ground terminals located at Columbus, Ohio. In addition, 20 and 30 GHz radiometric temperatures were measured along the same propagation paths; and the 20 GHz radiometric temperature was also measured at a third ground terminal. The results of these measurements are presented, and diversity gains for the four pairs of propagation paths are discussed. The scintillation characteristics of the received signals are also presented.

ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment

The fixed 20/30 GHz ground terminal is described in detail; it is being used for path diversity measurements in the ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment. The current status and summary of operations are reviewed.

Minor planets and related objects. XIV - Asteroid /4/ Vesta

Gehrels (1967), investigating the direction of Vesta's pole, found that his light curves exhibited two distinct maxima. An analysis of all available light curves over the period from 1950 to 1973 shows that Vesta has a true period of 10h40m58s.84 (+ or - 0s.01 p.e.) with two maxima and two minima. Vesta's rotation is direct. The shape is that of a spheroid, with one diameter exceeding the other two by roughly 15%, and with an apparent shape irregularity near the south pole.-

Radar/radiometer facilities for precipitation measurements

The OSU ElectroScience Laboratory Radar/Radiometer Facilities are described. This instrumentation includes a high-resolution radar/radiometer system, a fully automated low-resolution radar system, and a small surveillance radar system. The high-resolution radar/radiometer system operates at 3, 9, and 15 GHz using two 9.1 m and one 4.6 m parabolic antennas, respectively. The low-resolution and surveillance radars operate at 9 and 15 GHz, respectively. Both the high- and low-resolution systems are interfaced to real-time digital processing and recording systems. This capability was developed for the measurement of the temporal and spatial characteristics of precipitation in conjunction with millimeter wavelength propagation studies utilizing the Advanced Technology Satellites. Precipitation characteristics derived from these measurements could also be of direct benefit in such diverse areas as: the atmospheric sciences, meteorology, water resources, flood control and warning, severe storm warning, agricultural crop studies, and urban and regional planning.

Multi axes vibration fixtures

A simplified technique and apparatus are described for testing the effects of vibration on various material specimen. Particular attention was given to tests along the orthogonal vibrational planes in order to prove the strength of the item under extraordinary conditions to which it will be subjected.
