Electron Excitation Cross Sections for the C II Transitions 2s(exp 2)2p P-2(exp 0) yields 2s2p(exp 2) P-4, D-2, and S-2

Experimental and theoretical excitation cross sections are reported for the transitions 2s(exp 2) 2p-2(exp 0) yield 2s2p(exp 2)P-4, D-2, and S-2 in C II. The transition wavelengths (energies) are 2324 A (5.34 eV), 1335 x (9.29 eV), and 1036 A (11.97 eV), respectively. Use is made of electron energy-loss and merged beams methods. The energy range covered is from below each threshold (4 - 11 eV) to 15-24 eV. As in previous work with O II, care was taken to assess and minimize the metastable fraction in the C II beam, to account for contributions from nearby energy-loss features, and to collect the full angular range of inelastically scattered electrons. A comparison is made for each transition between experiment and new 8-state R-matrix calculations. Subject headings: atomic data ultraviolet: general

Collision Strengths for Electron Impact Excitation of Inelastic Transitions in Ar II

We have calculated collision strengths for electron impact excitation of inelastic transitions in Ar II using the R-matrix method in two independent nine- and 19-state close-coupling approximations. In the nine-state calculation the 3s(sup 2)3p(sup 5)2p(sup 0), 3S(sup 3)p(sup 6)S-2, 3p(sup 4)(P-3)4s(sup 2)P, 3p(sup 4)(P-3)3d(sup 2)P, 3p(sup 4)(D-1)4s(sup 2)D, 3p(sup 4)(P-3)3d(sup 2)D, 3p(sup 4)(S-1)4s(sup 2)S, 3p(sup 4)(D-1)3d(sup 2)S and 3p(sup 4)(D-1)4d(sup 2)S states are included, while in the 19-state calculation these states plus an additional ten states 3p(sup 4)(P-3)3d(sup 2)F, 3p(sup 4)(P-3)4p(sup 2)D(sup 0), 2p(sup 0), 2S(sup 0), 3p(sup 4)(D-1)4p(sup 2)P(sup 0), 2D(sup O), 2F(sup 0), 3p(sup 4)(D-1)3d(sup 2)D, p-2 and 3p(sup 4)(S-1)4p(sup 2)P(sup 0) are considered. These target states are represented by fairly extensive configuration-interaction wavefunctions which yield excitation energies and oscillator strengths that are generally in good agreement with the available most accurate calculations and the experimental values. Rydberg series of resonances converging to the excited state thresholds are included in the calculation. The effective collision strengths are obtained assuming a Maxwellian distribution of electron energies which are tabulated over the temperature range (0.5-20) x 10(exp 4) K.

Electron excitation cross sections for the 2s(2)2p(3)4S(O) -- 2s(2)2p(3)2D(O) (forbidden) and 4S(O) -- 2s2p(4) 4P (resonance) transitions in O II

Experimental and theoretical excitation cross sections are reported for the first forbidden transition 4S(O) -- 2S(2)2p(3) 2D(O) (lambda-lambda 3726, 3729) and the first allowed (resonance) transition 4S(O) -- 2s2p(4) 4P(lambda-833) in O II. Use is made of electron energy loss and merged-beams methods. The electron energy range covered is 3.33 (threshold) to 15 eV for the S -- D transition, and 14.9 (threshold) to 40 eV for the S -- P transition. Care was taken to assess and minimize the metastable fraction of the O II beam. An electron mirror was designed and tested to reflect inelastically backscattered electrons into the forward direction to account for the full range of polar scattering angles. Comparisons are made between present experiments and 11-state R-matrix calculations. Calculations are also presented for the 4S(O) -- 2s(2)2p(3)2P(O) (lambda-2470) transition.

Energy Levels and Oscillator Strengths for Allowed Transitions in S III

We have calculated energy levels and oscillator strengths for dipole-allowed transitions between the terms belonging to the 3s(sup 2)3p(sup 2), 3s3p(sup 3), 3S(sup 2)3p3d, 3S(sup 2)3p4s, 3S(sup 2)3p4p and 3s(sup 2)3p4d configurations of S iii in the LS-coupling scheme. We used flexible radial functions and included a large number of configurations in the configuration-interaction expansions to ensure convergence. The calculated energy levels are in close agreement with the recent laboratory measurement. The present oscillator strengths are compared with other calculations and experiments and most of the existing discrepancies between the available calculations are resolved.

Coronal electron density diagnostic from Fe XII

We present observations of the forbidden coronal lines Fe XII 1242 A and 1349 A from active regions and from two flares, obtained by the SO82B slit spectrograph onboard Skylab. The line intensity ratio R = I(1242 A)/I(1349 A) is sensitive to electron density. We have calculated this ratio using recent atomic data, and obtained coronal electron densities at T = 1.5 x 10(exp 6) K for our observations. We find a range in N(sub e) of (0.5 to 7.2) x 10(exp 9)/cm(exp -3) for active regions, which is in good agreement with previous results from other diagnostic ratios in this temperature range, and of approximately (0.9 to 12) x 10(exp 9)/cm(exp -3) (or higher) for flares, which is generally low compared to previous flare results. The flare values employ particularly weak 1349 A observations and may not be reliable. From an observation of an active region just inside the solar limb, giving the best coverage in our data of both line profiles, we find a line width (FWHM) for both lines of 0.20 A, which corresponds to a nonthermal velocity of 18 km/sec.

Excitation cross sections for the ns 2S yields np 2P resonance transitions in Mg(+) (n = 3) and Zn(+) (n = 4) using electron-energy-loss and merged-beams methods

Electron-excitation cross sections are reported for the 3s 2S yields 3p 2P(h, k) resonance transition in Mg(+) at energies from threshold (4.43 eV) to approximately 9 times threshold (40.0 eV). The electron-energy-loss merged-beams technique used in these measurements is described in detail. In addition, the method of separating contributions of the elastically scattered (Coulomb) and the inelastically scattered electrons in the present Mg(+) case and previously reported Zn(+) results is described. Comparisons in the experimental energy range are made for Mg(+) with the two five-state close-coupling theoretical calculations carried out herein, and with other published close-coupling, distorted-wave, and semiempirical calculations. The present Mg(+) cross sections and Zn(+) cross sections from earlier measurements are tabulated.

Oscillator strengths and electron collisional excitation cross sections for atomic oxygen

The electron-impact excitations of 12 states of O I are analyzed using a close-coupling approximation. The absorption oscillator strengths for dipole-allowed transitions among the states are calculated. Cross sections for excitation of the states by electron impact in the energy region 13.87 to 100 eV are compared with the data of Smith (1976) and Doering and Gulcicek. It is observed that there is a correlation between the data at energies 13.87, 20, and 30 eV for the (3)P-3p(5)P transition and at energies 13.87 and 16.5 eV for the (3)P-3s(5)S(0) transitions; however, for the dipole-allowed (3)P-3d(3)D(0) and (3)P-3s(prime)(3)D(0) transitions there are discrepancies in magnitude.

Electron-impact excitation of atomic oxygen

A close-coupling approximation is employed to theoretically investigate the excitation of the 3s3S0 and 3p3P states of atomic oxygen for electron impact energies ranging from 13.87-100 eV. The target states included in the expansion of the total wave function are modeled by accurate configuration-interaction wave functions. The results are consistent with recent experimental findings for the dipole-allowed 3P-3s3S0 transition.

Autioionizing states in the photionization of the 3s(2)3p(4) (3)Pe ground state of sulfur

The partial and total photoionization cross sections for the S(3s/2/3p/4/ /3/Pe) ground state are calculated in both the dipole length and velocity forms. The prominent features in the cross sections are the autoionization Rydberg series converging to S+(3s/2/p/3/ /2/D/0/, /2/P/0/) excited-state thresholds. The results are pertinent to the study of sulfur in the plasma of Jupiter's satellite Io.

Electron density-sensitive line ratios for Fe XII in the solar corona

The collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of fine-structure transitions from the ground 3s23p3 configuration to the excited 3s3p4 configuration in Fe XII are presented. These are calculated by transforming the K-matrices obtained in a nonrelativistic R-matrix method to K-matrices in intermediate coupling using term-coupling coefficients which take into account the effect of breakdown of target LS coupling. Extensive configuration-interaction wave functions are used to represent the target states. The effective collision strengths are determined assuming a Maxwellian distribution of electron energies. Rydberg series of resonances converging to the excited state thresholds are explicitly included in the calculation. The relative level populations and emission-line strengths for Fe XII are calculated using the new atomic data presented in this paper and that published by Tayal, Henry, and Pradhan (1987) and Tayal and Henry (1986) over a wide range of electron densities and temperatures (1-2 x 10 to the 6th K). Present results for collision strengths and emission-line strengths are compared with the previous calculation of Flower (1977). Some significant differences are noted.

Effective collision strengths for electron impact excitations in S II

Electron impact collision strengths for forbidden, semiforbidden, and allowed transitions in S II calculated using the R-matrix method are presented. Configuration interaction wave functions are used to represent the six target states included in the calculation. At low impact energies the collision strengths are dominated by resonances for several transitions. The contribution from higher partial waves is obtained in the close-coupling approximation with exchange terms omitted. Results are presented for the effective collision strengths over a wide temperature range (5000-150,000 K) of astrophysical interest. The present results for the 4S(0) yields 2P(0) transition are 20-30 percent lower than previous calculations, while for the 4S(0) yields 2D(0) transition they are in good agreement. The results are approximately 30 percent higher than those of Ho and Henry (1983) for the 4S(0) yields 2P(0) transition at 80,000 K, and the difference between the two results increases with decreasing temperatures (under 80,000 K).

Oscillator strengths for Ar VII, Ca IX and Fe XV

The excitation energies and oscillator strengths are calculated for electric-dipole-allowed and intercombination transitions between 3s2 1S, 3s3p(1,3)P0, 3p2 3P, 1D, 1S and 3s3d(1,3)D states in Ar VII, Ca IX, and Fe XV ions of the magnesium sequence. These states are represented by the fairly large configuration-interaction expansions. The calculations have been carried out in both LS and intermediate coupling schemes. The relativistic corrections have been included through the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. The results are compared with previous theoretical calculations and with measurements.
