Secondhand Exposure to Simulated Cannabis Vaping Aerosols

Emissions from cannabis vaping degrade indoor air quality and expose non-users to secondhand pollutants. We investigated how the vaping mixture composition affects indoor aerosol characteristics and exposures. Simulated cannabis vaping aerosol was produced by flash evaporation in a 20 m3 chamber of mixtures containing terpenoids, cannabinoids, cannabis extract constituents, and the adulterant vitamin E acetate (VEA). Aerosol time- and size-resolved concentrations (8 nm-2.5 μm at 1 Hz) were measured, and a dosimetry model was used to evaluate the intake of secondhand aerosols. The results showed peak particle number (PN) concentrations between 0.7 × 106 and 13 × 106 cm-3 and peak mass concentration (PM1.0) between 65 and 1191 μg m-3 at t = 5 min after emission. Concentrations decreased to 21-57% of peak PN and 33-69% of peak PM1.0 at t = 60 min. The PM1.0 yield was 0.06 for a terpenoid-only mixture, 0.22-0.36 for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-terpenoid mixtures, and >1 for mixtures containing high concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD) or VEA. For intake deposition, the highest aerosol fraction was deposited in the pulmonary region, followed by the tracheobronchial and head regions. Deposition increased in the presence of THC, CBD, or VEA, with aerosols <100 nm contributing the majority of particles deposited in all regions.

Inhalation of Trace Metals in Secondhand and Thirdhand Tobacco Smoke Can Result in Increased Health Risks

Here, the presence of toxic metals in tobacco smoke is well documented. However, few studies have quantified trace metals in secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS). Their presence in indoor air can contribute to nonsmokers’ exposures and health effects. In this study, emission and deposition rates of toxic trace metals were determined, and their airborne concentration in typical indoor scenarios was predicted. PM 2.5 was collected on Teflon-coated filters at various times following a smoking event in a room-sized chamber over a 43 h period. The concentration of 28 trace metals was determined by extraction and analysis using inductively coupled plasma-triple quadrupole-mass spectrometry (ICP-QQQ-MS). Emission and indoor deposition rates of cadmium, arsenic, chromium, manganese, beryllium and selenium were determined, and used to predict concentrations expected in a smokers’ home and a smoking bar. In most of the considered scenarios, average indoor concentrations of Cd, As, and Cr exceeded their corresponding cancer risk thresholds and, in some cases, also noncancer reference exposure levels, more than 3 h after smoking ended. The fraction of cadmium that remained airborne was significantly higher than those of other metal traces and that of PM 2.5 , suggesting an association of Cd traces with small particles.

Functional composites by programming entropy-driven nanosheet growth

Here, nanomaterials must be systematically designed to be technologically viable. Driven by optimizing intermolecular interactions, current designs are too rigid to plug in new chemical functionalities and cannot mitigate condition differences during integration. Despite extensive optimization of building blocks and treatments, accessing nanostructures with the required feature sizes and chemistries is difficult. Programming their growth across the nano-to-macro hierarchy also remains challenging, if not impossible. To address these limitations, we should shift to entropy-driven assemblies to gain design flexibility, as seen in high-entropy alloys, and program nanomaterial growth to kinetically match target feature sizes to the mobility of the system during processing. In tis report, following a micro-then-nano growth sequence in ternary composite blends composed of block-copolymer-based supramolecules, small molecules and nanoparticles, we successfully fabricate high-performance barrier materials composed of more than 200 stacked nanosheets (125 nm sheet thickness) with a defect density less than 0.056 µm -2 and about 98% efficiency in controlling the defect type. Contrary to common perception, polymer-chain entanglements are advantageous to realize long-range order, accelerate the fabrication process (<30 min) and satisfy specific requirements to advance multilayered film technology. This study showcases the feasibility, necessity and unlimited opportunities to transform laboratory nanoscience into nanotechnology through systems engineering of self-assembly.
