Petrographic studies of refractory inclusions from the Murchison meteorite

Textural and mineral-chemical data on freeze-thaw disaggregated refractory inclusions from the Murchison meteorite are reported. The data were obtained with neutron activation analysis, SEM, and spectroscopy, the study revealed corundum-bearing inclusions, spinel-hibonite aggregates and spherules, and spinel-pyroxene and elivine-pyroxene inclusions. One of the three spinel-, pyroxene-, forsterite-rich inclusions had an amoeba-shaped spinel-pyroxene core, implying vapor-to-solid condensation and therefore crystallization from a melt. It is concluded that the meteorite formation encompassed diverse nebular materials, and that further studies of the meteorite will enhance the data base on the planetary nebular processes.

Chemical compositions of refractory inclusions in the Murchison C2 chondrite

Neutron activation has been used to analyze samples from ten refractory inclusions in Murchison for 36 elements. Two inclusions, BB-5 and MUCH-1, have large negative Yb anomalies unaccompanied by correspondingly large and negative Eu anomalies; six inclusions have group II or III patterns, or variants of such patterns. The frequency of highly fractionated REE patterns, and the absence of group I patterns, suggest that refractory inclusions in Murchison stopped equilibrating with the nebular gas at higher temperatures than most Allende coarse grained inclusions. Murchison inclusions tend to be lower in nonrefractory elements than Allende coarse grained inclusions, further suggesting that, on average, the former underwent less severe secondary alteration than the latter.

Refractory inclusions in the Murchison meteorite

Although melilite-rich and feldspathoid-bearing inclusions have been revealed in the Murchison C2 chondrite by mineralogical and petrographic studies, none of these is identical to the inclusions found to date in Allende. Each type of inclusion is characterized by a different suite of alteration products and/or rim layers from all the other types, indicating modification of the inclusions in a wide range of different physicochemical environments after their primary crystallization. All of these inclusions contain some iron-free rim phases which could not have formed by reaction of the inclusions with fluids in the Murchison parent body, because the latter would presumably have been rich in oxidized iron.

Chemical composition of HAL, an isotopically-unusual Allende inclusion

Samples of hibonite, black rim, and portions of friable rim from an unusual Allende inclusion, named HAL, were analyzed by INAA and RNAA for 37 major, minor, and trace elements. An unusually low amount of Ce was found in HAL, although it otherwise was highly enriched in REE compared to C1 chondrites. HAL is also depleted in Sr, Ba, U, V, Ru, Os, and Ir relative to other refractory elements. It is concluded that the distribution of REE between hibonite and rims was established when hibonite and other refractory minerals were removed at slightly different temperatures from a hot, oxidizing gas in which they previously coexisted as separate grains. Possible locations for the chemical and mass dependent isotopic fractionation are considered to be in ejecta from the low temperature helium-burning zone of a supernova and in the locally oxidizing environment generated by evaporation of interstellar grains of near-chondritic chemical composition.

The Antarctic achondrite ALHA 76005 - A polymict eucrite

ALHA 76005 is a basaltic achondrite containing few, if any, orthopyroxenes. Its bulk major and trace element composition is like that of a non-cumulate eucrite, and unlike that of a howardite. It contains a variety of igneous clasts which differ in their textures, pyroxene/plagioclase ratios and pyroxene and plagioclase compositions. One clast, No. 4, was found to have the REE pattern of a cumulate eucrite and an oxygen isotopic composition different from that of the bulk meteorite. Both the chemical and oxygen isotopic composition of clast No. 4 suggest that it was derived from a source different from its host. These observations lead to the conclusion that ALHA 76005 is a polymict eucrite.

Lattice model theory of the equation of state covering the gas, liquid, and solid phases

The three stable states of matter and the corresponding phase transitions were obtained with a single model. Patterned after Lennard-Jones and Devonshires's theory, a simple cubic lattice model containing two fcc sublattices (alpha and beta) is adopted. The interatomic potential is taken to be the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential. Employing the cluster variation method, the Weiss and the pair approximations on the lattice gas failed to give the correct phase diagrams. Hybrid approximations were devised to describe the lattice term in the free energy. A lattice vibration term corresponding to a free volume correction is included semi-phenomenologically. The combinations of the lattice part and the free volume part yield the three states and the proper phase diagrams. To determine the coexistence regions, the equalities of the pressure and Gibbs free energy per molecule of the coexisting phases were utilized. The ordered branch of the free energy gives rise to the solid phase while the disordered branch yields the gas and liquid phases. It is observed that the triple point and the critical point quantities, the phase diagrams and the coexistence regions plotted are in good agreement with the experimental values and graphs for argon.

On the magnon interaction in Haematite. 2: Magnon energy of the acoustical mode and magnetic critical fields

Previous spin wave theories of the antiferromagnet hematite were extended. The behavior of thermodynamic quantities around the Morin transition temperature was studied, and the latent heat of the Morin transition was calculated. The temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic resonance frequency and the parallel and perpendicular critical spin-flop magnetic fields were calculated. It was found that the theory agrees well with experiment.

Coherent potential theory of a random binary alloy Effects of scattering from two-sites clusters and off-diagonal randomness

Extension of the single-site coherent potential approximation for random binary alloys to include the effect of off-diagonal randomness and pair scattering. This extension is achieved by analyzing a one-band model of a random binary alloy in terms of a two-sites coherent potential approximation. Numerical results are presented for a number of different alloys. In the overlapping-band case, the presence of off-diagonal randomness is shown to modify the bandwidths to values larger than those obtained from the virtual-crystal approximation. A simple iterative procedure is described for overcoming the convergence difficulties in the split-band case. In this limit, the inclusion of pair scattering and off-diagonal randomness is found to lead to the appearance of structure in the density of states of the minority component band.

On the magnon interaction in haematite. I - Magnon energy of optical mode.

The effect of magnon interaction on the magnon energies of haematite was studied by the use of a recently developed random phase approximation. In this study, the spin Hamiltonian and the magnon energy were written in a power series of (1/S), where S denotes the magnitude of spin. It is known that the expression of magnon energy is rigorous up to the second term of this series. It is found that the optic mode energy is small if the free optic mode energy is small, which is contrary to Herbert's (1969) conclusion. This direct proportionality between the optic mode energy and the free optic mode energy was not confirmed in the higher order terms of 1/S.

Earth physics and phase transformations program: A concept and proposal

A program to study the geophysical characteristics of the earth is presented as an integration of the different disciplines that constitute the earth sciences, through the foundation of a generalized geodynamic theory of earth physics. A program is considered for defining the physical constants of the earth's material which parametrize the hydrodynamic equation in the microscopic solid state behavior of the crystals of the lithosphere. In addition, in order to lay the foundation for a generalized theory in earth physics, specific research areas are considered, such as the nature of the kinetics of the phase transitions in mineral assemblages, the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of crystals which are major constituents of mineral assemblages, and the transport properties of pure crystals which are major constituents of mineral assemblages.
