Enhancing the Carbon Monoxide Oxidation Performance through Surface Defect Enrichment of Ceria-Based Supports for Platinum Catalyst

Effective synthesis and application of single-atom catalysts on supports lacking enough defects remain a significant challenge in environmental catalysis. Herein, we present a universal defect-enrichment strategy to increase the surface defects of CeO 2 -based supports through H 2 reduction pretreatment. The Pt catalysts supported by defective CeO 2 -based supports, including CeO 2 , CeZrO x , and CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 (CA), exhibit much higher Pt dispersion and CO oxidation activity upon reduction activation compared to their counterpart catalysts without defect enrichment. Specifically, Pt is present as embedded single atoms on the CA support with enriched surface defects (CA-HD) based on which the highly active catalyst showing embedded Pt clusters (Pt C ) with the bottom layer of Pt atoms substituting the Ce cations in the CeO 2 surface lattice can be obtained through reduction activation. Embedded PtC can better facilitate CO adsorption and promote O 2 activation at Pt C –CeO 2 interfaces, thereby contributing to the superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity of the Pt/CA-HD catalyst after activation.

Pd-CeO 2 catalyst facilely derived from one-pot generated Pd@Ce-BTC for low temperature CO oxidation

Due to the capacity to offer abundant catalytic sites within porous solids featuring high surface areas, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have garnered considerable attention as prospective catalysts in environmental catalysis. Here, to promote the industrial application of MOFs, there is an urgent need for an effective and environmental-friendly preparation approach. Breaking through the limitation of the traditional two-step preparation method that Pd was introduced to the already prepared Ce-BTC (Pd/Ce-BTC, BTC = 1, 3, 5 benzenetricarboxylate), in this work, we present a novel one-pot solvothermal method for synthesizing the Pd material supported by Ce-BTC (Pd@Ce-BTC). After pyrolysis in N 2 flow or air flow, Pd-CeO 2 catalysts derived from Pd@Ce-BTC exhibited much higher CO oxidation activity than those from Pd/Ce-BTC. Moreover, Pd/Ce-BTC and Pd@Ce-BTC pyrolyzed in N 2 flow (Pd/Ce-BTC-N and Pd@Ce-BTC-N) could better catalyze the oxidation of CO than Pd/Ce-BTC and Pd@Ce-BTC pyrolyzed in air flow (Pd/Ce-BTC-A and Pd@Ce-BTC-A). Further characterizations revealed that the abundant surface Ce 3+ species, rich surface adsorbed oxygen species and superior redox properties were the main reasons for the superior CO oxidation activity of Pd@Ce-BTC-N.

Fine-Tuning of Pt Dispersion on Al 2 O 3 and Understanding the Nature of Active Pt Sites for Efficient CO and NH 3 Oxidation Reactions

Fine-tuning the dispersion of active metal species on widely used supports is a research hotspot in the catalysis community, which is vital for achieving a balance between the atomic utilization efficiency and the intrinsic activity of active sites. In this work, using bayerite Al(OH) 3 as support directly or after precalcination at 200 or 550 °C, Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with distinct Pt dispersions from single atoms to clusters (ca. 2 nm) were prepared and evaluated for CO and NH 3 removal. Richer surface hydroxyl groups on AlO x (OH) y support were proved to better facilitate the dispersion of Pt. However, Pt/Al 2 O 3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion could exhibit better activity in CO/NH 3 oxidation reactions. Further reaction mechanism study revealed that the Pt sites on Pt/Al 2 O 3 with lower Pt dispersion could be activated to Pt 0 species much easier under the CO oxidation condition, on which a higher CO adsorption capacity and more efficient O 2 activation were achieved simultaneously. Compared to Pt single atoms, PtO x clusters could also better activate NH 3 into –NH 2 and –HNO species. The higher CO adsorption capacity and the more efficient NH 3 /O 2 activation ability on Pt/Al 2 O 3 with relatively lower Pt dispersion well explained its higher CO/NH 3 oxidation activity. This study emphasizes the importance of avoiding a singular pursuit of single-atom catalyst synthesis and instead focusing on achieving the most effective Pt species on Al 2 O 3 support for targeted reactions. Finally, this approach avoids unnecessary limitations and enables a more practical and efficient strategy for Pt catalyst fabrication in emission control applications.

Tuning the Interaction between Platinum Single Atoms and Ceria by Zirconia Doping for Efficient Catalytic Ammonia Oxidation

Aiming at the development of an efficient NH 3 oxidation catalyst to eliminate the harmful NH 3 slip from the stationary flue gas denitrification system and diesel exhaust aftertreatment system, a facile ZrO 2 doping strategy was proposed to construct Pt 1 /Ce x Zr 1–x O 2 catalysts with a tunable Pt-CeO 2 interaction strength and Pt–O–Ce coordination environment. According to the results of systematic characterizations, Pt species supported on Ce x Zr 1–x O 2 were mainly in the form of single atoms when x ≥ 0.7, and the strength of the Pt-CeO 2 interaction and the coordination number of Pt–O–Ce bond (CN Pt–O–Ce ) on Pt 1 /Ce x Zr 1–x O 2 showed a volcanic change as a function of the ZrO 2 doping amount. Here, it was proposed that the balance between the reasonable concentration of oxygen defects and limited surface Zr–O x species well accounted for the strongest Pt-CeO 2 interaction and the highest CN Pt–O–Ce on Pt/Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 2 . It was observed that the Pt/Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 2 catalyst exhibited much higher NH 3 oxidation activity than other Pt/Ce x Zr 1–x O 2 catalysts. The mechanism study revealed that the Pt 1 species with the stronger Pt-CeO 2 interaction and higher CN Pt–O–Ce within Pt/Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 2 could better activate NH 3 adsorbed on Lewis acid sites to react with O 2 thus resulting in superior NH 3 oxidation activity. This work provides a new approach for designing highly efficient Pt/CeO 2 based catalysts for low-temperature NH 3 oxidation.

Surface Lattice-Embedded Pt Single-Atom Catalyst on Ceria-Zirconia with Superior Catalytic Performance for Propane Oxidation

Tuning the metal–support interaction and coordination environment of single-atom catalysts can help achieve satisfactory catalytic performance for targeted reactions. Herein, via the facile control of calcination temperatures for Pt catalysts on pre-stabilized Ce 0.9 Zr 0.1 O 2 (CZO) support, Pt single atoms (Pt 1 ) with different strengths of Pt–CeO 2 interaction and coordination environment were successfully constructed. With the increase in calcination temperature from 350 to 750 °C, a stronger Pt–CeO 2 interaction and higher Pt-O-Ce coordination number were achieved due to the reaction between PtO x and surface Ce 3+ species as well as the migration of Pt 1 into the surface lattice of CZO. The Pt/CZO catalyst calcined at 750 °C (Pt/CZO-750) exhibited a surprisingly higher C 3 H 8 oxidation activity than that calcined at 550 °C (Pt/CZO-550). Here, through systematic characterizations and reaction mechanism study, it was revealed that the higher concentration of surface Ce 3+ species/oxygen vacancies and the stronger Pt–CeO 2 interaction on Pt/CZO-750 could better facilitate the activation of oxygen to oxidize C 3 H 8 into reactive carbonate/carboxyl species and further promote the transformation of these intermediates into gaseous CO 2 . The Pt/CZO-750 catalyst can be a potential candidate for the catalytic removal of hydrocarbons from vehicle exhaust.

Constructing efficient CuO x -CeO 2 catalyst for NO reduction by CO: New insights into the structure–activity relationship

CuO-CeO 2 based materials have been recognized as promising substitutes for precious metal catalysts in emission control field due to their superior redox property and low cost. In this work, by optimizing the deposition process of CeO 2 and CuO onto γ-Al 2 O 3 , highly dispersed CuO clusters on unique CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 support with small CeO 2 particles (7Cu-Ce/CeAl) were successfully constructed for efficient NO reduction by CO, which exhibited much higher NO removal efficiency and N 2 selectivity than CuO catalysts supported on γ-Al 2 O 3 (7Cu/Al) and conventional CeO 2 -Al 2 O 3 support (7Cu/CeAl). Moreover, H 2 O showed limited inhibition effect on the catalytic performance of 7Cu-Ce/CeAl catalyst. With the help of Raman spectra, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, etc., it was clearly revealed that the abundant Cu + /Ce 3+ paired sites with surface synergetic oxygen vacancies (SSOV) on 7Cu-Ce/CeAl catalyst could effectively facilitate the adsorption and activation of CO and NO, thus significantly enhancing the NO removal efficiency.

Fine-tuned local coordination environment of Pt single atoms on ceria controls catalytic reactivity

Constructing single atom catalysts with fine-tuned coordination environments can be a promising strategy to achieve satisfactory catalytic performance. Herein, via a simple calcination temperature-control strategy, CeO 2 supported Pt single atom catalysts with precisely controlled coordination environments are successfully fabricated. The joint experimental and theoretical analysis reveals that the Pt single atoms on Pt 1 /CeO 2 prepared at 550 °C (Pt/CeO 2 -550) are mainly located at the edge sites of CeO 2 with a Pt–O coordination number of ca. 5, while those prepared at 800 °C (Pt/CeO 2 -800) are predominantly located at distorted Ce substitution sites on CeO 2 terrace with a Pt–O coordination number of ca. 4. Pt/CeO 2 -550 and Pt/CeO 2 -800 with different Pt 1 -CeO 2 coordination environments exhibit a reversal of activity trend in CO oxidation and NH 3 oxidation due to their different privileges in reactants activation and H 2 O desorption, suggesting that the catalytic performance of Pt single atom catalysts in different target reactions can be maximized by optimizing their local coordination structures.

Pt Atomic Single-Layer Catalyst Embedded in Defect-Enriched Ceria for Efficient CO Oxidation

The local coordination structure of metal sites essentially determines the performance of supported metal catalysts. Here, using a surface defect enrichment strategy, we successfully fabricated Pt atomic single-layer (Pt ASL ) structures with 100% metal dispersion and precisely controlled local coordination environment (embedded vs adsorbed) derived from Pt single-atoms (Pt 1 ) on ceria-alumina supports. The local coordination environment of Pt 1 not only governs its catalytic activity but also determines the Pt 1 structure evolution upon reduction activation. For CO oxidation, the highest turnover frequency can be achieved on the embedded Pt ASL in the CeO 2 lattice, which is 3.5 times of that on the adsorbed Pt ASL on the CeO 2 surface and 10–70 times of that on Pt1. The favorable CO adsorption on embedded Pt ASL and improved activation/reactivity of lattice oxygen within CeO 2 effectively facilitate the CO oxidation. This work provides new insights for the precise control of the local coordination structure of active metal sites for achieving 100% atomic utilization efficiency and optimal intrinsic catalytic activity for targeted reactions simultaneously.
