Tuning Electronic Properties of 2D Materials Using Metal Adsorbates: Cu at WTe 2 Edges

Two-dimensional materials exhibit properties promising for novel applications. Topologically protected states at their edges can be harnessed for use in quantum devices. We use ab initio simulations to examine properties of edges in 1T'-WTe 2 monolayers, known to exhibit topological order, and their interactions with Cu atoms. Comparison of (010)-oriented edges that have the same composition but different terminations shows that, as the number of Cu atoms increases, their thermodynamically-preferred arrangement depends on the details of the edge structure. Cu atoms aggregate into a cluster at the most stable edge; while the cluster is non-magnetic, it spin-polarizes the W atoms along the edge, which removes the topological protection. At the metastable edge, Cu atoms form a chain incorporated into the WTe 2 lattice; the topological state is preserved in spite of the dramatic edge restructuring. This suggests that exploiting interactions of metal species with metastable edge terminations can provide a path towards non-invasive interfaces.

Metastable orientation relationships in thin film Cu-Cr bilayers

Metastable orientation relationships (ORs) between Cu and Cr were kinetically stabilized via epitaxial thin film deposition on MgO(001). Both Cu(001) and Cr(001) grow epitaxially on MgO(001). The Bain OR was observed by x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy for Cr(001) / Cu(001) / MgO(001). In contrast, three Cr/Cu ORs were found for Cr deposition on Cu(001) / MgO(001): the Pitsch OR, and two previously unreported ORs related to the Bain and Pitsch ORs, respectively. Ab initio calculations predict the energetics of these ORs, and reveal that the deformation resistance of Cr leads to the three observed ORs on Cu(001).

Atomic Gradient Structure Alters Electronic Structure in 3D across the Bulk and Enhances Photoactivity

Abstract Understanding structure–function relationships enables the design of materials with tailored functionalities. The long‐standing challenge is to design materials with high active volume to improve efficiency. Tailored grain boundaries and lattice defects are traditionally used to tune the electronic structure near interfaces or defects to promote electron and hole separation. However, the active volume of point defect sites or interfaces in these traditional photocatalysts is extremely low. This study reports a structure with continuous atomic positional deformation across the bulk, altering the electronic structure in 3D and creating a significantly higher active volume. Such a structure in anatase is obtained and tuned by phase transformation during the heating process. Transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory results reveal that atomic deformations result in continuous band bending across the particles, facilitating electron–hole separation, inhibiting their recombination, and inducing dramatically enhanced photoactivity. These findings enable a different materials design paradigm that can potentially be harnessed for a broad range of applications.
