Auxiliary sequential deposition enables 19%-efficiency organic solar cells processed from halogen-free solvents

High-efficiency organic solar cells are often achieved using toxic halogenated solvents and additives that are constrained in organic solar cells industry. Therefore, it is important to develop materials or processing methods that enabled highly efficient organic solar cells processed by halogen free solvents. In this paper, we report an innovative processing method named auxiliary sequential deposition that enables 19%-efficiency organic solar cells processed by halogen free solvents. Our auxiliary sequential deposition method is different from the conventional blend casting or sequential deposition methods in that it involves an additional casting of dithieno[3,2-b:2’,3’-d]thiophene between the sequential depositions of the donor (D18-Cl) and acceptor (L8-BO) layers. The auxiliary sequential deposition method enables dramatic performance enhancement from 15% to over 18% compared to the blend casting and sequential deposition methods. Furthermore, by incorporating a branched-chain-engineered acceptor called L8-BO-X, device performance can be boosted to over 19% due to increased intermolecular packing, representing top-tier values for green-solvent processed organic solar cells. Comprehensive morphological and time-resolved characterizations reveal that the superior blend morphology achieved through the auxiliary sequential deposition method promotes charge generation while simultaneously suppressing charge recombination. This research underscores the potential of the auxiliary sequential deposition method for fabricating highly efficient organic solar cells using environmentally friendly solvents.

Interplanar Ferromagnetism Enhanced Ultrawide Zero Thermal Expansion in Kagome Cubic Intermetallic (Zr,Nb)Fe 2

A cubic metal exhibiting zero thermal expansion (ZTE) over a wide temperature window demonstrates significant applications in a broad range of advanced technologies but is extremely rare in nature. Here, enabled by high-temperature synthesis, we realize tunable thermal expansion via magnetic doping in the class of kagome cubic (Fd-3m) intermetallic (Zr,Nb)Fe 2 . A remarkably isotropic ZTE is achieved with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion (+0.47 x 10 -6 K -1 ) from 4 to 425 K, almost wider than most ZTE in metals available. A combined in situ magnetization, neutron powder diffraction, and hyperfine Mössbauer spectrum analysis reveals that interplanar ferromagnetic ordering contributes to a large magnetic compensation for normal lattice contraction upon cooling. Trace Fe-doping introduces extra magnetic exchange interactions that distinctly enhance the ferromagnetism and magnetic ordering temperature, thus engendering such an ultrawide ZTE. Finally, this work presents a promising ZTE in kagome metallic materials.

Solid additive engineering enables high-efficiency and eco-friendly all-polymer solar cells

Currently, morphology optimization of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) strongly depends on the use of solvent additives, which are usually highly toxic and harmful to the environment and human health. Here, we report a green and volatile solid additive, 2-methoxynaphthalene (2-MN). It was found that the incorporation of 2-MN into a PM6:PY-DT blend can effectively manipulate the aggregations of PM6 and PY-DT during film depositing and thermal annealing processes and results in highly ordered molecular packing and favorable phase-separated morphology. Consequently, a record-high efficiency of 17.32% is achieved for the PM6:PY-DT device. Moreover, 2-MN-processed all-PSCs were fabricated by using non-halogenated solvent. High efficiencies of 17.03% and 16.67% are obtained for all-PSCs fabricated under nitrogen atmosphere and ambient conditions, respectively. Finally, our work shows that the utilization of 2-MN as a green and solid additive is a simple and feasible strategy to optimize the morphology and sheds new light on eco-friendly fabrication and application of all-PSCs.

Polymerized Small Molecular Acceptor with Branched Side Chains for All Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency over 16.7%

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of small molecule acceptor (SMA)-based organic solar cells have already exceeded 18%. However, the development of polymer acceptors still lags far behind their SMA counterparts mainly due to the lack of efficient polymer acceptors. In this work, a series of polymer acceptors named PY-X (with X being the branched alkyl chain) are designed and synthesized by employing the same central core with the SMA L8-BO but with different branched alkyl chains on the pyrrole motif. It is found that the molecular packing of SMA-HD featuring 2-hexyldecyl side chain used in the synthesis of PY-HD is similar to L8-BO, in which the branched alkyl chains lead to condensed and high-order molecular assembly in SMA-HD molecules. When combined with PM6, PY-HD-based all polymer solar cell (all-PSC) exhibits a high PCE of 16.41%, representing the highest efficiency for the binary all-PSCs. Moreover, the side-chain modification on the pyrrole site position further improves the performance of the all-PSCs, and the PY-DT-based device delivers a new record high efficiency of 16.76% (certified as 16.3%). The work provides new insights for understanding the structure–property relationship of polymer acceptors and paves a feasible avenue to develop efficient conjugated polymer acceptors.
