The association between vaginal microbiota disorders and early missed abortion: A prospective study

Abstract Introduction The objective of this study was to explore the association between disordered vaginal microbiota and missed abortion to ascertain potential causes of missed abortion related to vaginal microbiology. Material and methods This study was a prospective cohort study with a comparison group (reference group). Vaginal secretions from the posterior fornix of women in the early stages of pregnancy were collected in the Xiangya Third Hospital of Central South University in Changsha, Hunan, China, from November 2018 to November 2019. A total of 54 cases of missed abortion (case group) and 50 cases of normal pregnancy requiring induced abortion (reference group) were analyzed. Bacterial DNA was extracted, hybridized with gene‐specific primers, and then detected using a bacterial chip. The composition and relative abundance of vaginal microbiota in the two groups were compared using α‐diversity analysis, β‐diversity analysis, and the linear discriminant analysis effect size method. Results The α‐diversity analysis showed that the Simpson index of the case group was lower than that of the reference group, whereas the Shannon index in the case group was higher. The relative abundance of Firmicutes in the case group (42.52%) was lower than in the reference group (51.03%, p < 0.05), as was the relative abundance of Lactobacillus (case group 16.51%, reference group 23.00%; p < 0.05). Interestingly, levels of Mycoplasma genitalium and Ureaplasma were lower in the case group ( p < 0.05). The relative abundance of Lactobacillus crispatus , Lactobacillus jensenii , and Lactobacillus gasseri was also significantly lower in the case group than in the reference group ( p < 0.05). The pathways enriched in the case group were predominantly related to metabolism, whereas the genetics‐related pathways were predominantly enriched in the reference group. Conclusions Bacteria are more diverse and unevenly distributed in patients with missed abortion. Decreases in the proportion of vaginal Lactobacillus and changes in Lactobacillus species in these patients may increase the chance of genital tract pathogenic bacterial infection. To our knowledge, our study was the first to observe that a decrease of Firmicutes levels in the vaginal microbiota might impair energy metabolism and have an association with missed abortion.

Enhancing the Reversibility of Lattice Oxygen Redox Through Modulated Transition Metal–Oxygen Covalency for Layered Battery Electrodes

Utilizing reversible lattice oxygen redox (OR) in battery electrodes is an essential strategy to overcome the capacity limitation set by conventional transition metal redox. However, lattice OR reactions are often accompanied with irreversible oxygen oxidation, leading to local structural transformations and voltage/capacity fading. Herein, it is proposed that the reversibility of lattice OR can be remarkably improved through modulating transition metal-oxygen covalency for layered electrode of Na-ion batteries. By developing a novel layered P2-Na 0.6 Mg 0.15 Mn 0.7 Cu 0.15 O 2 electrode, it is demonstrated that the highly electronegative Cu dopants can improve the lattice OR reversibility to 95% compared to 73% for Cu-free counterpart, as directly quantified through high-efficiency mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. Crucially, the large energetic overlap between Cu 3d and O 2p states dictates the rigidity of oxygen framework, which effectively mitigates the structural distortion of local oxygen environment upon (de)sodiation and leads to the enhanced lattice OR reversibility. The electrode also exhibits a completely solid-solution reaction with an ultralow volume change of only 0.45% and a reversible metal migration upon cycling, which together ensure the improved electrochemical performance. Finally, these results emphasize the critical role of transition metal-oxygen covalency for enhancing the reversibility of lattice OR toward high-capacity electrodes employing OR chemistry.

High-Temperature Superconductivity in Hydrides: Experimental Evidence and Details

Abstract Since the discovery of superconductivity at ~ 200 K in H 3 S [1], similar or higher transition temperatures, T c s, have been reported for various hydrogen-rich compounds under ultra-high pressures [2]. Superconductivity was experimentally proved by different methods, including electrical resistance, magnetic susceptibility, optical infrared, and nuclear resonant scattering measurements. The crystal structures of superconducting phases were determined by X-ray diffraction. Numerous electrical transport measurements demonstrate the typical behavior of a conventional phonon-mediated superconductor: zero resistance below T c , shift of T c to lower temperatures under external magnetic fields, and pronounced isotope effect. Remarkably, the results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions, which describe superconductivity in hydrides within the framework of the conventional BCS theory. However, despite this acknowledgement, experimental evidences for the superconducting state in these compounds have recently been treated with criticism [3–7], which apparently stems from misunderstanding and misinterpretation of complicated experiments performed under very high pressures. Here, we describe in greater detail the experiments revealing high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides under high pressures. We show that the arguments against superconductivity [3–7] can be either refuted or explained. The experiments on the high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides clearly contradict the theory of hole superconductivity [8] and eliminate it [3].
