ANS ultraviolet observations of dwarf Cepheids

Ultraviolet observations of three dwarf Cepheids (VZ Cnc, SX Phe, and AI Vel) are presented. The UV light curves are consistent with those in the visual region. When compared to standard stars, all three dwarf Cepheids exhibit flux deficiencies at the shortest observed wavelengths. The most extreme deficiencies appear for SX Phe; these may be related to the other properties previously noted for this star, including low metallicity, high space motion, and low luminosity.

Spacecraft momentum management procedures

Techniques appropriate for implementation onboard the space telescope and other spacecraft to manage the accumulation of momentum in reaction wheel control systems using magnetic torquing coils are described. Generalized analytical equations are derived for momentum control laws that command the magnetic torquers. These control laws naturally fall into two main categories according to the methods used for updating the magnetic dipole command: closed loop, in which the update is based on current measurements to achieve a desired torque instantaneously, and open-loop, in which the update is based on predicted information to achieve a desired momentum at the end of a period of time. Physical interpretations of control laws in general and of the Space Telescope cross product and minimum energy control laws in particular are presented, and their merits and drawbacks are discussed. A technique for retaining the advantages of both the open-loop and the closed-loop control laws is introduced. Simulation results are presented to compare the performance of these control laws in the Space Telescope environment.

Ground attitude determination and gyro calibration procedures for the HEAO missions

The Attitude Ground Support System (AGSS) at Goddard Space Flight Center provides ground attitude support for the High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO) missions. The AGSS uses information telemetered from sun sensors, gyroscopes, star trackers (STAs), and an onboard computer to calculate updates to the onboard attitude reference and gyro calibration parameters. This paper presents the procedures used by the AGSS in computing reference and calibration updates; it also provides HEAO-1 postlaunch statistics that illustrate the ability to maintain 0.25-deg accuracy in the onboard attitude reference. Simulated HEAO-B results show an improvement in reference accuracy through the use of calibration maneuvers.

Performance of ground attitude determination procedures for HEAO-1

Ground attitude support for HEAO 1 provided at GSFC by the HEAO 1 Attitude Ground Support System (AGSS) is described. Information telemetered from Sun sensors, gyroscopes, star trackers, and an onboard computer are used by the AGSS to compute updates to the onboard attitude reference and gyro calibration parameters. The onboard computer utilizes these updates in providing continuous attitudes (accurate to 0.25degree) for use in the observatory's attitude control procedures. The relationship between HEAO 1 onboard and ground processing, the procedures used by the AGSS in computing attitude and gyro calibration updates, and the performance of these procedures in the HEAO 1 postlaunch environment is discussed.
