Rocket center Peenemuende - Personal memories

A brief history of Peenemuende, the rocket center where Von Braun and his team developed the A-4 (V-2) rocket under German Army auspices, and the Air Force developed the V-1 (buzz bomb), wire-guided bombs, and rocket planes, is presented. Emphasis is placed on the expansion of operations beginning in 1942.

Radiation in the universe

When Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered radiation one hundred years ago, it seemed that what was discovered was one of the rarest and most volatile members of the family of the basic modules of our natural world. Today cosmologists report that a substantial part of the universe's radiation energy consists of X-rays, which travel through cosmic space with the speed of light.

The perfectly ideal accelerometer

Given here is a condensed version of the results and conclusions that developed during the Workshop. Upper limits of residual accelerations that can be tolerated during materials processes, presented as acceptable and as desirable limits, are shown. Designs and capabilities of various accelerometers, and their inherent problems, are compared. Results of acceleration measurements on Spacelab flights are summarized, and expected acceleration levels on the Space Station under various conditions are estimated.

Defining a national microgravity facility for America's Space Station

Plans for a Microgravity and Materials Processing Facility (with a Manufacturing and Technology Laboratory Module as its main element) on the U.S. Space Station are reviewed and illustrated with drawings, graphs, tables, and diagrams. Consideration is given to the ideal and practically achievable acceleration environment, on-orbit sample preparation and analysis, crew operations, technology-development requirements, and classes of materials with commercial potential (with an emphasis on organic molecular crystals).
