Leakproof Swaged Joints in Thin-Wall Tubing

Tubular inserts reinforce joints, reducing incidence of leaks. In new swaging technique, tubular inserts placed inside ends of both tubes to be joined. Made from thicker-wall tubing with outside diameter that matches inside diameter of thin tubing swaged, inserts support tube ends at joint. They ensure more uniform contact between swage fitting and tubing. New swaging technique developed for Al/Ti/V-alloy hydraulic supply lines.

Detecting Cracks in Rough Metal Surfaces

Test based on eddy-current probe technique identifies cracks in swaged metals. Hinged collar with spring-loaded latch holds probe in place on part tested. For repeated measurements on same or similar parts, collar loosened and moved to various measuring positions. Method suitable for many kinds of metal parts, including swaged fittings, tubing, and pipes. Used for rapid crack/no-crack determinations in suspect parts already installed.

Membrane Switches Check Seal Pressure

Array of flexible membrane switches used to indicate closure of seal. Switch membrane responds to pressure exerted by rigid surface on compliant sealing medium and provides switch contacts monitored electronically. Membrane switches connected in series and placed under seal. When all switches are closed lamp or LED lights up, indicating requisite seal pressure has been realized at all switch positions. Principle used to ensure integrity of seals on refrigerator and oven doors, weatherstripping, hatches, spacecraft, airplanes, and submarines.

Corrosion detection and evaluation

Report details comprehensive study of nondestructive methods for detecting and/or evaluating up to six different types of corrosion: general, galvanic filiform, pitting, intergranular, and stress. Studied methods include: visual/optical inspection, radiography, penetrant inspection, analysis by polarized light, electrical conductivity measurements, pH analysis, and ultrasonic inspection.

Holographic nondestructive testing of laminates

Very small differences in laminate thickness result in interference fringes in holograph image. These indicate presence of unbonded area. Theoretical knowledge of membrane deflection may be used in conjunction with reduced number of pretest experiments to determine number of optical fringes that should appear for given laminate.

Holographic testing with a double reference beam

Image of unstressed object is taken with reflected beam and one reference beam. Object is then stressed and second (double) exposure is made. Developed film plate provides double exposure hologram that can be projected by simultaneous illumination with both reference beams. Appearance of multiple images may be eliminated while manipulating fringe patterns.

Methods of assessing structural integrity for space shuttle vehicles

A detailed description and evaluation of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods are given which have application to space shuttle vehicles. Appropriate NDE design data is presented in twelve specifications in an appendix. Recommendations for NDE development work for the space shuttle program are presented.
