Lithium abundances among solar-type pre-main-sequence stars

Measurements of Li I 6707 A line strengths were carried out for two samples of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars (L 1641 and Taurus-Auriga), and the Li abundances estimated for PMS stars are compared with those deduced from observations of Li line strengths for main-sequence stars in the Alpha Persei cluster. It was found that the maximum Li abundances among the PMS stars with solar mass values greater than 1.0 exceed the maximum abundances for Alpha Per stars by at least 0.3 dex. Some PMS stars, including few apparently young stars, showed large (greater than 1.0 dex) Li depletion, and some apparently old PMS stars showed little or no depletion.

A study of the stellar population in the Lynds 1641 dark cloud. I - The IRAS catalog sources

The character of the sources identified in the IRAS Point Source Catalog and located within the boundaries of the nearest giant molecular cloud, Lynds 1641 is discussed. New optical and near-infrared photometry are combined to provide spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these objects divided into three classes: class I objects with flat or rising spectra, class II objects with spectra intermediate in slope between a flat and blackbody spectrum, and class III objects with spectra similar to those of blackbodies. It is found that L1641 contains a much larger percentage of class I sources than does the nearby Taurus-Auriga star-forming complex. Spectral energy distributions for the IRAS-selected sample are examined and compared with SEDs for young stellar objects (YSOs) located in Taurus-Auriga. The IRAS-selected sources having optical counterparts in the H-R diagram are identified and discussed along with the distribution of masses and ages for these YSOs.

Circumstellar material associated with solar-type pre-main-sequence stars - A possible constraint on the timescale for planet building

The observed frequency distribution of near-IR excesses for a sample of 83 stars in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming complex is used to provide an estimate of the number of solar-type premain-sequence (PMS) stars surrounded by circumstellar disks. The results suggest that if all such PMS stars are initially surrounded by disks, then disk lifetimes must range from much less than 3 x 10 to the 6th yr to about 10 to the 7th yr, providing a constraint on the time available for planet building. PMS stars with small near-IR excesses, but significant mid-IR and far-IR excesses, provide some evidence for changes in disk structure with time.

Circumstellar gas associated with HL Tauri - Evidence for a remnant infalling envelope

Molecular carbon absorption lines in the spectrum of HL Tau has been discovered near 8775 A. These C2 lines have a heliocentric radial velocity of 43 + or - 3 km/s, redshifted by 23 + or - 3 km/s relative to the star and the associated molecular cloud. This velocity difference suggests that the molecular carbon absorption arises in an infalling envelope. Since KI and diffuse interstellar bands are much weaker than expected, the chemical composition and/or excitation conditions in the HL Tau envelope appear to differ substantially from those in the interstellar medium.

Near-infrared imaging of Lynds 1551 IRS 5

High-spatial-resolution 1.6-micron (H) and 2.2-micron (K) images of the well-known young stellar object (YSO) L1551 IRS 5 reveal an extended, conically-shaped reflection nebula. The comparison of the images at the two wavelengths shows a shift in the position of the flux maximum, demonstrating that the H band maximum is not identical with the illuminating star. Morphological differences between the H band and K band images as well as a color map indicate that extinction effects in the reflection nebula are important. The results support a model that posits that, at H and K, the star in IRS 5 is surrounded by an optically thick disk and illuminates the inner wall of the nozzle created by the anisotropic mass outflow from the embedded young star.

Optical polarization measurements in the vicinity of nearby star-forming complexes. I - The Lynds 1641 molecular cloud

Optical polarization results for 219 stars located in the vicinity of the Lynds 1641 giant molecular cloud are presented. The data indicate that L 1641 is representative of a class of star-forming complexes in which the magnetic field has played an incidental role during the global cloud-collapse phases. It is suggested that the magnetic field may control the direction of collimated mass outflows associated with young stellar objects.

The evoluation of young stellar object disks and their environment

By carrying out direct imaging and spectroscopic observations of young, pre-main sequence stars in nearby molecular clouds researchers have begun: to define the frequency with which disks of approximately solar system size and mass form around young stars, and to understand the timescale for disk evolution; to characterize the early radiation (ultraviolet and keV particle) environment of circumstellar disks through study of evolution of stellar winds, wind/disk interactions and the UV and optical emission characteristics of young stars; and to understand the evolution of the solid and gaseous constituents of disks through observations of absorption features in circumstellar gas, broad emission features produced by organic compounds on grain surfaces, and absorption features (e.g., ice) produced in grain mantles. These programs offer the possibilty of relating results from astrophysical studies of the environment to newly-formed stars to the record of planet formation preserved in the solar system. Researchers completed a spectroscopic survey of 30 T Tauri stars with ages ranging from approximately 2 x 10 to the 5th power to 3 x 10 to the 7th power years. From analysis of (OI) and (SII) emission lines, it was concluded that all but two of the stars in our sample are surrounded by optically opaque disks of dimension approximately 50 AU. The two remaining objects show evidence consistent with partial disk clearing (at an age approximately 3 x 10 to the 6th power year). R and I band CFHT observations yielded detections of disks of dimension approximately 100 AU surrounding 5 additional T Tauri stars.

Images of star-forming regions. II - The circumstellar environment of L1551 IRS 5

The circumstellar environment of L 1551 IRS 5 is investigated based on high-resolution 8000 A (i) and 9000 A (z) broadband CCD images. A small conical reflection nebula extending from a bright semistellar knot located near the cusp of the nebula is noted. It is suggested that the point-like structure at lambda of less than about 3.7 microns may represent a bright knot of dust-scattered light located on the inner surface of a flattened circumstellar disk surrounding the radio source. Evidence is found of sharp changes in the position angle of the jet emanating from IRS 5, possibly resulting from precession of the jet nozzle provided by a dense inner disk which has dynamically decoupled from the much larger flattened molecular structure.

Luminosity excesses in low-mass young stellar objects - A statistical study

This paper presents a statistical study in which the observed total luminosity is compared quantitatively with an estimate of the stellar luminosity for a sample of 59 low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Taurus-Auriga complex. In 13 of the analyzed YSOs, luminosity excesses greater than 0.20 are observed together with greater than 0.6 IR excesses, which typically contribute the bulk of the observed excess luminosity and are characterized by spectral energy distributions which are flat or rise toward long wavelengths. The analysis suggests that YSOs showing the largest luminosity excesses typically power optical jets and/or molecular outflows or have strong winds, as evidenced by the presence of O I emission, indicating a possible correlation between accretion and mass-outflow properties.

The magnetic field geometry in the vicinity of HH 7-11/HH 12 and HH 33/HH 40

The small-scale structure of the interstellar magnetic field in the vicinity of the Herbig-Haro objects HH 7-11/HH 12 and HH 33/40 is derived from CCD imaging polarimetry of stars nearby to these young stellar object driven outflows. The outflow associated with SVS 13/HH 7-11 lies approximately parallel to the local field direction. The outflow mapped by HH 33/HH 40 is also well aligned with the local magnetic field. However, the orientation of the outflow associated with HH 12 located 2 arcmin to the north of HH 7-11 is offset from the inferred magnetic field direction by 60 deg. These results taken together with those of previous studies suggest: (1) magnetic fields are directly or indirectly responsible for the observed orientation of outflows associated with newborn stars in the majority of cases; and (2) in some cases, the flow properties may depend upon other characteristics of the parent cloud core.

Forbidden line and H-alpha profiles in T Tauri star spectra - A probe of anisotropic mass outflows and circumstellar disks

The results of a high-resolution spectroscopic study of 10 T Tauri stars (TTS) and two Herbig emission stars are presented based on red echelle spectra including the lines of forbidden O I 6300 A, forbidden N II 6584 A, forbidden S II 6716, 6731 A, as well as H-alpha. The forbidden lines display a continuous progression of profile types. The velocity structure in the forbidden lines is critically examined and compared to computed line profiles for a number of different wind models. Constant velocity spherical or conical winds fail to reproduce the observed line profiles, which are better explained by a wind with a latitude-dependent velocity field. A prediction of the wind model correlating the velocity of the reversal at H-alpha and the forbidden line velocity structure as a function of the view angle to the star is explored. Estimates of the average densities and sizes for the TTS forbidden emission regions are presented, and mass-loss rates are computed. IRAS far-IR fluxes are used to estimate the disk sizes.

Mass outflows associated with young stellar objects

Properties of optical and molecular outflows associated with young stellar objects are discussed with emphasis placed on new results concerning outflow energetics, collimating structures, and the relationship between the outflow properties and the magnetic field geometry characterizing the host molecular clouds. Particular consideration is given to the IRAS observations of YSO mass outflows, which reveal extended far-IR emission associated with high-velocity molecular gas and in which a number of disk-like structures associated with YSO outflow sources were resolved. The disk axes appeared to lie along the direction of molecular outflows or stellar jets. The mass outflows showed a remarkable tendency to align along the direction of the magnetic fields which thread their host molecular clouds, suggesting that the cloud magnetic field must play an important role in determining the flattening (and perhaps the rotation) of protostellar structures.
