A ballistic investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of a blunt vehicle at hypersonic speeds in carbon dioxide and air

Missions to Mars require the successful development of aerobraking technology, and therefore a blunt cone representative of aerobrake shapes is investigated. Ballistic tests of the Pioneer Venus configuration are conducted in carbon dioxide and air at Mach numbers from 7 to 20 and Reynolds numbers from 0.1 x 10 exp 5 to 4 x 10 exp 6. Experimental results show that for defined conditions aerodynamic research can be conducted in air rather than carbon dioxide, providing savings in time and money. In addition, the results offer a prediction of flight aerodynamics during entry into the Martian atmosphere. Also discussed is a comparison of results from two data-reduction techniques showing that a five-degree-of-freedom routine employing weighted least-squares with differential corrections analyzes ballistic data more accurately.

Streamtube analysis of supersonic combustion in an in-tube-scramjet

The chemical nonequilibrium flow around a projectile propelled by supersonic combustion inside a tube of premixed, stoichiometric H2-air mixture is examined using a quasi-one-dimensional flow model and a 28-reactions/13 species chemistry model. Two series of calculations have been performed; one at the initial pressure 5 atm and the other 0.01 atm. Three projectile Mach numbers, namely 8, 10 and 5 were used. The minimum cone angle of the projectile forebody needed for triggering ignition can be estimated from the results of the calculations. The numerical results also show that high initial pressure reduces the induction and reaction zones to a single detonation front, and thrust is produced by the high pressure in the combustor and nozzle. Low initial pressure lengthens the reaction zone. In all the cases, the momentum of the flow changes only slightly because the tube in which the projectile travels limits the area for the nozzle flow to expand.

Experimental program for real gas flow code validation at NASA Ames Research Center

The experimental program for validating real gas hypersonic flow codes at NASA Ames Rsearch Center is described. Ground-based test facilities used include ballistic ranges, shock tubes and shock tunnels, arc jet facilities and heated-air hypersonic wind tunnels. Also included are large-scale computer systems for kinetic theory simulations and benchmark code solutions. Flight tests consist of the Aeroassist Flight Experiment, the Space Shuttle, Project Fire 2, and planetary probes such as Galileo, Pioneer Venus, and PAET.

Investigation of an excited jet diffusion flame at elevated pressure

Experiments are carried out for studying the relationship between flow structure, flow excitation, and the reaction process in the near field of a low-speed coflowing jet diffusion flame. The effect of axial forcing and increasing pressure on the structure and controllability of the flame is studied to elucidate some of the underlying control mechanisms. The experiments are conducted in a variable-pressure flow facility permitting the study of reacting flows in the 10-1000 kPa (0.1-10 atm) pressure range. The flame is excited by a small-amplitude periodic fluctuation added to the central fuel jet exit velocity. Among the varied excitation frequencies employed, a narrow band is found in which several of the flow instabilities seem to be in coincidence, causing periodic breakup of the flame into a series of distinct eddies. This is called the strongly-coupled state. Effects of excitation frequencies at and above the strongly-coupled range are presented.
