Mu2e straw tube tracker gas flow quality control

Here, we present a tracker gas flow quality control method developed for the Mu2e straw tube tracker. Using time-dependent current measurements, we quantify the onset time of ionization gain induced by an 55 F source during gas exchange, which is correlated to the gas conductance in the straw. This allows for the identification of channels with inadequate flow. This approach is broadly applicable to other gaseous detectors that require high-channel-count screening.

Developing a data-driven method to constrain the antiproton background in the Mu2e experiment

The Mu2e experiment will search for CLFV neutrinoless coherent muon to electron conversion in the field of an Al nucleus. The expected signal is a 104.97 MeV/c monochromatic $e^-$ (CE). CE-like $e^-$’s could also come from $\bar{p}$’s annihilating in the Stopping Target (ST). The background induced by $\bar{p}$’s is expected to be low but has a large systematic uncertainty. It cannot be suppressed by the time window cut used to reduce the prompt background. However, $p\bar{p}$ annihilation in the ST is the only source of events in the Mu2e detector with multiple tracks coming from the ST, simultaneous in time, each with a momentum in the signal window region. We exploited this unique feature and developed algorithms to identify and reconstruct multi-track events. This paper discusses the status and prospects of this data-driven method to constrain the $\bar{p}$ background at Mu2e.

Variable energy X-ray fluorescence source

Here we detail the design of a variable energy, x-ray fluorescence source using a low activity (1.8×10 6 dpm) 99 Tc β source that irradiates thin foils. By rotating the source among foils of Ti, Zn, Nb, Ag, and Au, the device produces x rays between 4 and 70 keV at a rate near 1 Hz. When the source is placed in a storage position, the external radiation is non-detectable. The design of the shielding and rotation mechanism permits use in vacuum and at liquid nitrogen temperature. The design is intended for the study of the low energy response to radiation impinging upon Ge detector surfaces. The source will be useful for understanding the detector response in large-scale Ge arrays such as MAJORANA and LEGEND.
