The design and development of a third generation OSEE instrument

Optically Stimulated Electron Emission (OSEE) has been used to quantify surface contamination in the aerospace community. As advances are made towards the understanding of OSEE, it is desirable to incorporate technological advances with succeeding generations of instrumentation, so that improvements in the practical application of OSEE may be disseminated among the user community. Several studies undertaken by Yost, Welch, Abedin and others have expanded the knowledge base related to the underlying principles of OSEE. The conclusions of these studies, together with inputs from the user community were the foundation upon which the development of a third generation OSEE instrument was based. This manuscript describes the significant improvements incorporated into a third generation OSEE instrument as well as the elements unique to its design.

Double-Referenced, Pulsed, Phase-Locked Loop - DRP2L2

System allows precise measurement of phase shift between two toneburst signals initially derived from same periodic source but delayed by different amounts through either path-length differences, propagation velocity differences, or both. Used to measure accurately phase shift encountered by acoustic wave striking front and back surfaces of sample. Velocity known, resulting measurement is of sample thickness. Thickness known, measurement is of sound velocity. Technique applies to many sources of radiation and not limited to acoustics.

Pulsed Phase-Locked-Loop Strain Monitor

P2sup.L2sup. strain monitor measures strain by monitoring change in phase of acoustic signal that passes through stressed sample. Phase sample causes shift in frequency of VCO. As with other monitors of this type, instrument is only accurate in elastic range of material. Monitor is expected to have broad application in materials testing, structural design, fabrication and assembly.

Pseudo-continuous-wave acoustic instrument

Simple, inexpensive, and portable ultrasonic device accurately measures acoustic properties of liquids, gases, and solids, using pseudo-continuous wave responses from samples to measure change in resonant frequency or amplitude in acoustic signal.

ROUS bolt-tensioning monitor

Closed-loop feedback circuit system used to measure bolt tension. Advantages are its simplicity, higher accuracy, and potential low cost.
