Using UMM-Var and E2E to Improve the User Experience for Accessing NASA EOSDIS Data Sets

The UMM-Variables (Var) Metadata Model has been evolved to support an End-to-End Services (E2E) capability, which enables variable level subsetting, data transformation, and data reformatting. This talk will discuss what is new with the model, how users can get their metadata ready for the E2E capability, and include a demo of how the model is being used to drive and improve the user experience in Earthdata Search Client when accessing EOSDIS data sets.

Evolving UMM-S to Better Accommodate NASA EOSDIS Web User Interfaces and Downloadable Tools for Data Use

EOSDIS has a services metadata model that is growing too complex and trying to serve multiple use cases. A potential solution being explored is to break out the model for front-end and back-end use cases. This talk will discuss how best to accommodate web user interfaces and downloadable tools in NASA's Common Metadata Repository (CMR) and how to model this information for improved discovery centered around the user experience (UI/UX) approach. The challenges and strategy for addressing the evolution of the model will be discussed along with a proposed path forward for implementation.

NASA GCMD Keywords

The objective of this presentation is to give a basic introduction of the GCMD Keywords, keyword relationships, and Global Change Information System (GCIS) implementation of GCMD science keywords and associated relationships into GCIS website. The following topics will be discussed during the presentation: - What Are the GCMD Keywords? - Implementing Keywords and Relationships - Keyword Relationship Use Case: GCIS

Global Change Master Directory

Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keyword Management Process and Lifecycle

The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) keywords are a hierarchical set of controlled vocabulary covering the Earth science disciplines that have been evolving for over 25 years. The process for how these keywords have been curated and reviewed has also evolved. This presentation will convey the process for reviewing and approving the GCMD keywords, including fast track and yearly reviews through the ESDIS Standards Office, and how Earth science users can influence keyword additions and modifications. The presentation will also highlight how keywords facilitate the discovery of EOSDIS data and services and how other organizations are using the GCMD keywords.

New Metadata Capabilities within NASA's Common Metadata Repository (CMR)

This talk will convey the new capabilities and features of the UMM-Variables and the UMM-Services metadata model within the Common Metadata Repository (CMR) and how community engagement through the ESDIS Standards Office (ESO) review shaped the new versions of the models. The Unified Metadata Model (UMM) provides a common metadata model to unify legacy systems (i.e. GCMD (Global Change Master Directory), ECHO (Earth Observing System (EOS) Clearinghouse)) with new systems (i.e. CMR). The rationale and migration process of the Service Entry Resource Format (SERF) to the UMM-S will also be conveyed. The talk will conclude with discussing issues and lessons learned from the review process and how future reviews will be conducted to ensure a more targeted, meaningful review with a faster turn-around time for triage and implementation.

ESIP Documentation Cluster Session: GCMD Keyword Update

The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) Keywords are a hierarchical set of controlled Earth Science vocabularies that help ensure Earth science data and services are described in a consistent and comprehensive manner and allow for the precise searching of collection-level metadata and subsequent retrieval of data and services. Initiated over twenty years ago, the GCMD Keywords are periodically analyzed for relevancy and will continue to be refined and expanded in response to user needs. This talk explores the current status of the GCMD keywords, the value and usage that the keywords bring to different tools/agencies as it relates to data discovery, and how the keywords relate to SWEET (Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology) Ontologies.

Easing the Discovery of NASA and International Near-Real-Time Data Using the Global Change Master Directory

The Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) provides an extensive directory of descriptive and spatial information about data sets and data-related services, which are relevant to Earth science research. The directory's data discovery components include controlled keywords, free-text searches, and map/date searches. The GCMD portal for NASA's Land Atmosphere Near-real-time Capability for EOS (LANCE) data products leverages these discovery features by providing users a direct route to NASA's Near-Real-Time (NRT) collections. This portal offers direct access to collection entries by instrument name, informing users of the availability of data. After a relevant collection entry is found through the GCMD's search components, the "Get Data" URL within the entry directs the user to the desired data. http://gcmd.nasa.gov/r/p/gcmd_lance_nrt.

NASA's Global Change Master Directory: Discover and Access Earth Science Data Sets, Related Data Services, and Climate Diagnostics

NASA's Global Change Master Directory provides the scientific community with the ability to discover, access, and use Earth science data, data-related services, and climate diagnostics worldwide. The GCMD offers descriptions of Earth science data sets using the Directory Interchange Format (DIF) metadata standard; Earth science related data services are described using the Service Entry Resource Format (SERF); and climate visualizations are described using the Climate Diagnostic (CD) standard. The DIF, SERF and CD standards each capture data attributes used to determine whether a data set, service, or climate visualization is relevant to a user's needs. Metadata fields include: title, summary, science keywords, service keywords, data center, data set citation, personnel, instrument, platform, quality, related URL, temporal and spatial coverage, data resolution and distribution information. In addition, nine valuable sets of controlled vocabularies have been developed to assist users in normalizing the search for data descriptions. An update to the GCMD's search functionality is planned to further capitalize on the controlled vocabularies during database queries. By implementing a dynamic keyword "tree", users will have the ability to search for data sets by combining keywords in new ways. This will allow users to conduct more relevant and efficient database searches to support the free exchange and re-use of Earth science data. http://gcmd.nasa.gov/
