Shuttle passenger couch

Conceptual design and fabrication of a full scale shuttle passenger couch engineering model are reported. The model was utilized to verify anthropometric dimensions, reach dimensions, ingress/egress, couch operation, storage space, restraint locations, and crew acceptability. These data were then incorported in the design of the passenger couch verification model that underwent performance tests.

Neutral buoyancy testing of a shuttle orbiter crew compartment

The architectural and man-machine aspects of a shuttle orbiter crew compartment were examined. All phases of the Orbiter's flight mode from launch through zero gravity, reentry, and ferry flight are considered. The data provides an initial design criteria that treats the crew compartment as a total system and provides data that has a direct contribution to the development of flight hardware. Primary interest was centered on the design of the galley, hygiene facility, passenger couches, airlock, work station, and flight deck access. The man-machine interface emphasis was placed on identifying and developing solutions for problems in mobility/restraint, ingress/egress, accessibility, and volume utilization.

Neutral buoyancy testing of architectural and environmental concepts of space vehicle design

Design guidelines are presented that are applicable to providing habitability areas and furniture elements for extended periods in a zero gravity environment. This was accomplished by: (1) analyzing the existing habitability crew area requirements, mobility and restraint aids, cross-cultural design, and establishing a man model for zero gravity; (2) designing specific furniture elements, chair and table, and volumes for a stateroom, office, bathroom, galley, and wardroom; and (3) neutral buoyancy testing and evaluation of these areas.
