Measurement of the neutron cross section on argon between 95 and 720 MeV

We report an extended measurement of the neutron cross section on argon in the energy range of 95-720 MeV. The measurement was obtained with a 4.3-hour exposure of the Mini-CAPTAIN detector to the WNR/LANSCE beam at LANL. Compared to an earlier analysis of the same data, this extended analysis includes a reassessment of systematic uncertainties, in particular related to unused wires in the upstream part of the detector. Using this information we doubled the fiducial volume in the experiment and increased the statistics by a factor of 2.4. Here we also shifted the analysis from energy bins to time-of-flight bins. This change reduced the overall considered energy range, but improved the understanding of the energy spectrum of incoming neutrons in each bin. Overall, the new measurements are extracted from a fit to the attenuation of the neutron flux in five time-of-flight regions: 140ns-180ns, 120ns-140ns, 112ns-120ns, 104ns-112ns, 96ns-104ns. The final cross sections are given for the flux-averaged energy in each time-of-flight bin with statistical and systematic (syst) uncertainties: σ(146 MeV) = 0.60 $^{+0.14}_{-0.14}$ ±0.08(syst) b, σ(236 MeV) = 0.72 $^{+0.10}_{-0.10}$ ± 0.04(syst) b, σ(319 MeV) = 0.80 $^{+0.13}_{-0.12}$ ±0.040(syst) b, σ(404 MeV) = 0.74 $^{+0.14}_{-0.09}$ ±0.04(syst) b, σ(543 MeV) = 0.74 $^{±0.09}_{-0.09}$ ± 0.04(syst) b.

Search for signatures of sterile neutrinos with Double Chooz

We present a search for signatures of neutrino mixing of electron anti-neutrinos with additional hypothetical sterile neutrino flavors using the Double Chooz experiment. The search is based on data from 5 years of operation of Double Chooz, including 2 years in the two-detector configuration. The analysis is based on a profile likelihood, i.e. comparing the data to the model prediction of disappearance in a data-to-data comparison of the two respective detectors. The analysis is optimized for a model of three active and one sterile neutrino. It is sensitive in the typical mass range ${5 \times 10^{-3}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2 \lesssim \varDelta m^2_{41} \lesssim {3 \times 10^{-1}}\,\mathrm{eV}^2$ for mixing angles down to $\sin ^2 2\theta _{14} \gtrsim {0.02}$. No significant disappearance additionally to the conventional disappearance related to $\theta _{13}$ is observed and correspondingly exclusion bounds on the sterile mixing parameter $\theta _{14}$ as a function of $\varDelta m^2_{41}$ are obtained.

The JSNS 2 detector

The JSNS 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment aims to search for oscillations involving a sterile neutrino in the eV 2 mass-splitting range. The experiment will search for the appearance of electron antineutrinos oscillated from muon antineutrinos. The electron antineutrinos are detected via the inverse beta decay process using a liquid scintillator detector. A 1 MW beam of 3 GeV protons incident on a spallation neutron target produces an intense and pulsed neutrino source from pion, muon, and kaon decay at rest. The JSNS detector is located 24 m away from the neutrino source and began operation from June 2020. The detector contains 17 tonnes of gadolinium (Gd) loaded liquid scintillator (LS) in an acrylic vessel, as a neutrino target. It is surrounded by 31 tonnes of unloaded LS in a stainless steel tank. Optical photons produced in LS are viewed by 120 R7081 Hamamatsu 10-inch Photomultiplier Tubes (PMTs). In this study, we describe the JSNS detector design, construction, and operation.
