Under the extremely cold conditions in the polar winter stratosphere, heterogeneous reactions involving HCl and CIONO(sub 2) on the surfaces of polar stratospheric cloud particles can release large amounts of reactive chlorine from these reservoirs leading to rapid chemical loss of ozone in the Arctic lower stratosphere during late winter and early spring.

This paper describes the validation of stratospheric C10 measurements by the MLS on the UARS. The comparisons done to date between MLS and other measurements of C10 indicate general agreement to within the estimated MLS uncertainties and the uncertainties of the comparative measurements.
Image recovery at a resolution limited only by diffraction is now possible at large telescopes. The theory of speckle image reconstruction is explained and the current status of a video recording and digitization system for the reconstruction procedure is described. Potential applications of the process when used with very large telescopes are discussed. The constraints on telescope design imposed by these techniques are listed.
Image reconstruction from astronomical speckle data using the Knox-Thompson algorithm has now been extensively demonstrated as feasible through analysis and computer simulations. Experimental verification of the technique and its implementation for astronomy places stringent constraints on the recording system and requires complex processing algorithms to handle the many experimental details. In this paper we describe a video recording system specifically designed for the requirements of speckle imaging. This system has been built and tested, yielding high quality image reconstructions from a laboratory-atmospheric simulator for a wide range of input light levels and test objects.
