Particle interactions with obliquely propagating magnetosonic waves

Four cases of nonlinear obliquely propagating magnetosonic (MS) waves are considered using a test particle approach for particles interaction with (1) monochromatic waves propagating both sunward and antisunward, (2) monochromatic waves propagating unidirectionally toward the Sun, (3) a broad band spectrum, propagating both sunward and antisunward, and (4) a broadband spectrum, propagating sunward only. As the solar wind decelerates rapidly inside the bow shock, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) increases. Calculations have been performed taking into account such a spatially dependent IMF (based on observations). We find that significant particle acceleration is achieved for both the monochromatic wave and the 'turbulent' MS waves, for oblique propagation (angles between the interplanetary magnetic field and the propagation vector larger than 30 deg). This is due to the fact that at oblique angles resonance width increases. We have compared the relative acceleration of particles for the four cases. Pitch angle scattering and acceleration of particles are found to be much larger in the case of sunward and antisunward propagating waves than those for the sunward waves only. This is due to larger relative phase velocities in the two cases. Also, acceleration of particles is less in the case of a uniform magnetic field than that in the case of spatially increasing magnetic field. The particles get more pitch angle scattered and accelerated in the latter case.

Nonlinear stability of Halley comethosheath with transverse plasma motion

Weakly nonlinear Magneto Hydrodynamic (MHD) stability of the Halley cometosheath determined by the balance between the outward ion-neutral drag force and the inward Lorentz force is investigated including the transverse plasma motion as observed in the flanks with the help of the method of multiple scales. The eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions are obtained for the linear problem and the time evolution of the amplitude is obtained using the solvability condition for the solution of the second order problem. The diamagnetic cavity boundary and the adjacent layer of about 100 km thickness is found unstable for the travelling waves of certain wave numbers. Halley ionopause has been observed to have strong ripples with a wavelength of several hundred kilometers. It is found that nonlinear effects have stabilizing effect.

Acceleration of cometary H2O group pickup ions by obliquely propagating nonlinear magnetosonic waves

The observations made during the encounter with comet Giacobini Zinner show that the character of MHD turbulence is governed by the magnetosonic (MS) waves generated by the pickup ions via a resonant cyclotron instability. The interaction of cometary ions in the mass loaded solar wind with MS waves propagating away from the comet and oblique to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is investigated using the test particle approach. Ion trajectories, distribution functions, widths of pitch angle scattering and energy diffusion are obtained. We have also investigated the relationship between pitch angle scattering and the three parameters, namely, alpha, the angle between the solar wind flow direction and the ambient magnetic field, theta(sub BK), the angle between the ambient magnetic field and the wave propagation vector, and the ion injection velocity.

Stability of the Halley cometosheath with resistivity and plasma motion

The MHD stability of the cometary inner sheath determined by the balance between the inward Lorentz body force and the outward ion-neutral drag force is investigated by numerically solving the wave equations which include resistivity, plasma motion and plasma pressure with the help of two-point boundary value method. The eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions are obtained numerically by treating the cometary inner sheath as a layer of finite thickness, bounded by the contact surface, that is, the diamagnetic cavity boundary. To gain insight into the problem, certain limiting cases of the wave equations are also discussed. The diamagnetic cavity boundary and the adjacent layer of about 100-km thickness of Comet Halley is found to be unstable. The effects of finite plasma pressure, dissociative recombination, mass loading due to photoionization, resistivity, and plasma motion are found to be stabilizing but are unable to quench the instability completely. Motion of the Halley ionopause has been confirmed by observations.

Numerical solution of wave equations for the stability of the inner cometo-sheath

Numerical solution of the MHD wave equations for stability of the cometary sheath determined by the balance between the inward Lorentz body force and the outward ion-neutral drag force is obtained by using a two-point boundary value method. The eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions are obtained numerically by treating the cometary inner sheath as a layer of finite thickness, bounded by the contact surface, i.e., the diamagnetic cavity boundary. The magnetic field structure discovered in the ionosphere of Comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner is found to be unstable. The effects of finite plasma pressure, dissociative recombination, and mass loading due to photoionization are found to be stabilizing but are unable to quench the instability completely. It is also found that the higher the neutral production rate the lesser is the growth rate for the instability.

Nonlinear electrostatic drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

Nonlinear analysis of electrostatic drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is performed. It is shown that the analysis leads to the propagation of the weakly nonlinear dispersive waves, and the nonlinear behavior is governed by the nonlinear Burger's equation.

Stability of an inhomogeneous two-component plasma with magnetic viscosity

The stability of a semiinfinite quasi-neutral inhomogeneous plasma with magnetic viscosity has been discussed by using JWKB approximation in which the parameters are regarded slowing varying. Dispersion relation is obtained and discussed. It is found that the inhomogeneous system is unstable for all perturbations with k(y) = 0. A dispersion relation for homogeneous plasma is also obtained and discussed. It is shown that fast and slow-MHD waves propagate in the homogeneous plasma in the limit of almost perpendicular propagation under certain conditions.

Gravitational instability of a rotating partially-ionized plasma carrying a uniform magnetic field with Hall effect

The problem of gravitational instability of an infinite homogeneous self-gravitating medium carrying a uniform magnetic field in the presence of Hall effect has been investigated to include the effect due to rotation. The dispersion relation has been obtained. It has been found that the Jeans's criterion for the instability remains unaffected even when the effect due to rotation is considered in the presence of Hall effect carrying a uniform magnetic.

Drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in space plasmas

Drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities of a finite-beta plasma in equilibrium electric and magnetic fields which are perpendicular to each other are studied using two fluid equations. Three types of these instabilities are considered including the magnetosonic instability of a finite beta-homogeneous plasma, the electrostatic drift instability of an inhomogeneous low-beta plasma, and the magneto-acoustic instability of a high-beta inhomogeneous isothermal plasma. It is shown that the electric field has either stabilizing or destabilizing effect depending on conditions under consideration.

Alfvenic drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the presence of an equilibrium electric field

The Alfvenic drift Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of a high-beta plasma in the presence of equilibrium magnetic and electric fields perpendicular to each other are studied. The plasma components are assumed to have 2D sheared velocity in y and z directions. The dispersion relation is derived, and the instability criterion is determined. It is shown that the equilibrium electric field has either stabilizing or destabilizing effect depending on certain conditions discussed in the paper.
