Validation of implosion modeling through direct-drive shock timing experiments at the National Ignition Facility

Precise modeling of shocks in inertial confinement fusion implosions is critical for obtaining the desired compression in experiments. Shock velocities and post-shock conditions are determined by laser-energy deposition, heat conduction, and equations of state. This paper describes experiments at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) where multiple shocks are launched into a cone-in-shell target made of polystyrene, using laser pulse shapes with two or three pickets and varying on-target intensities. Shocks are diagnosed using the Velocity Interferometric System for Any Reflector diagnostic. Simulated and inferred shock velocities agree well for the range of intensities studied in this work. These results are the first shock-velocity measurements using direct drive on the NIF and provide a good measure of early-time, directly driven laser-energy coupling. Furthermore, the validated models add to the credibility of direct-drive-ignition designs at the megajoule scale.

Verification of a Monte Carlo binary collision model for simulating elastic and inelastic collisions in particle-in-cell simulations

We present the development and verification of a Monte Carlo binary collision model for simulating elastic and inelastic collisions in particle-in-cell simulations. We apply the corrected binary collision model originally developed for charged-particles collisions to all considered scattering channels, including Coulomb collisions, elastic neutral–neutral and charged–neutral collisions, ionization, excitation, and fusion. The model's implementation is described and verified through a series of simulations, including charged- and neutral-particle thermal equilibration, slowing of electrons in warm solid-density aluminum, collisional damping of a Langmuir wave, helium gas breakdown in an applied electric field, and thermonuclear and beam–target fusion. Then, we demonstrate the model within simulations of hydrogen plasma formation in the Princeton Field-Reversed Configuration as well as of the burning of aneutronic fusion fuel p-11B. The latter includes measurement of the fusion power density in a low-density plasma and fusion production due to the stopping of a proton ignitor beam in a compressed boron target.

Crowd cluster data in the USA for analysis of human response to COVID-19 events and policies

We provide data on daily social contact intensity of clusters of people at different types of Points of Interest (POI) by zip code in Florida and California. This data is obtained by aggregating fine-scaled details of interactions of people at the spatial resolution of 10 m, which is then normalized as a social contact index. We also provide the distribution of cluster sizes and average time spent in a cluster by POI type. This data will help researchers perform fine-scaled, privacy-preserving analysis of human interaction patterns to understand the drivers of the COVID-19 epidemic spread and mitigation. Current mobility datasets either provide coarse-level metrics of social distancing, such as radius of gyration at the county or province level, or traffic at a finer scale, neither of which is a direct measure of contacts between people. We use anonymized, de-identified, and privacy-enhanced location-based services (LBS) data from opted-in cell phone apps, suitably reweighted to correct for geographic heterogeneities, and identify clusters of people at non-sensitive public areas to estimate fine-scaled contacts.

Intrinsic Fano factor of nuclear recoils for dark matter searches

Nuclear recoils in germanium and silicon are shown to have much larger variance in electron-hole production than their electron recoil counterparts for recoil energies between 10 and 200 keV. This effect—owing primarily to deviations in the amount of energy given to the crystal lattice in response to a nuclear recoil of a given energy—has been predicted by the Lindhard model. Here, we parametrize the variance in terms of an intrinsic nuclear recoil Fano factor that is 24.3 ± 0.2 and 26 ± 8 at around 25 keV for silicon and germanium, respectively. The variance has important effects on the expected signal shapes for experiments utilizing low-energy nuclear recoils such as direct dark matter searches and coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering measurements.

Experimental Studies on a Compact Storage Scheme for Wavelet-based Multiresolution Subregion Retrieval

Wavelet transforms, when combined with quantization and a suitable encoding, can be used to compress images effectively. In order to use them for image library systems, a compact storage scheme for quantized coefficient wavelet data must be developed with a support for fast subregion retrieval. We have designed such a scheme and in this paper we provide experimental studies to demonstrate that it achieves good image compression ratios, while providing a natural indexing mechanism that facilitates fast retrieval of portions of the image at various resolutions.
