Extension of rezoned Eulerian-Lagrangian method to astrophysical plasma applications

The rezoned Eulerian-Lagrangian procedure developed by Brackbill and Pracht (1973), which is limited to simple configurations of the magnetic fields, is modified in order to make it applicable to astrophysical plasma. For this purpose, two specific methods are introduced, which make it possible to determine the initial field topology for which no analytical expressions are available. Numerical examples illustrating these methods are presented.

Shear-induced instability and arch filament eruption - A magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulation

A situation wherein a bipolar magnetic field embedded in a stratified solar atmosphere undergoes symmetrical shear motion at the footpoints is investigated via a 2D (nonplanar) MHD simulation. It was found that the vertical plasma flow velocities grow exponentially, leading to a new type of global MHD instability. The growth rate increases almost linearly until it reaches the same order of magnitude as the Alfven speed. Then a nonlinear MHD instability occurs beyond this point. It was found that the central loops are pinched by opposing Lorentz forces, and the outer closed loops stretch upward with the vertically-rising mass flow. The nonlinear dynamical shearing instability is illustrated by a numerical example that is given for three different values of the plasma beta that span several orders of magnitude.

Modified ICED-ALE method for astrogeophysical plasma flows

The Implicit-Continuous-Eulerian-Difference Mesh-Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ICED-ALE) algorithm of Brackbill and Pracht (1973) is modified for the study of astrophysical plasma flows in which dynamical effects are important. In the present study the general-energy-conservation law is directly applied to the iteration process, with the total (kinetic-, specific-internal-, and magnetic-) energy density being obtained implicitly at the end of the process. An example is computed in which the convergence speed of the latter method is substantially faster than that of the former. The initializing calculation, or explicit phase, in which the electric current density, magnetic diffusion of field, energy augmentation, and zero-order approximation of the flow velocity are given, is described. Consideration is given to the iteration process, or implicit phase, from which the exact Lagrangian solution for energy density, velocity, and a magnetic field is obtained.

Soliton and strong Langmuir turbulence in solar flare processes

The occurrence of modulational instability in the current sheet of a solar flare is investigated. Special attention is given to the plasma microinstability in this sheet and its relation to the flare process. It is found that solitons or strong Langmuir turbulence are likely to occur in the diffusion region under solar flare conditions in which the electric resistivity could be enhanced by several orders of magnitude in the region, resulting in significant heating and stochastic acceleration of particles. A numerical example is used to demonstrate the transition of the magnetic field velocity and plasma density from the outer MHD region into the diffusive region and then back out again with the completion of the energy conversion process. This is all made possible by an increase in resistivity of four to five orders of magnitude over the classical value.

A linear MHD instability analysis of solar mass ejections with gravitation

The linear MHD instability of a cylindrical plasma is used to investigate the origin of solar mass ejections, and the dispersion relation is solved numerically. The initial plasma-flow velocity is found to have a significant effect on the instability criteria and growth rate, and the instability growth-rate is shown to be larger in cases where plasma flow exists, relative to the static case. Results suggest that the plasma column may break into small pieces. Assuming a thin-tube approximation, gravity is found to have little effect on the instability of quasi-horizontal ejection, but to have considerable effect on the vertical ejection. In considering the gravitational force, an exact analytical solution is found for the vertical case, while asymptotic solutions are given for the horizontal and oblique cases.

On the heating mechanism of magnetic flux loops in the solar atmosphere

An investigation is conducted of physical heating mechanisms due to the ponderomotive forces exerted by turbulent waves along the solar atmosphere's curved magnetic flux loops. Results indicate that the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the flux loop can be classified into three parts, two of which represent the cooling or heating effect exerted by the ponderomotive force, while the third is the heating effect due to turbulent energy conversion from the localized plasma. This heating mechanism is used to illustrate solar atmospheric heating by means of an example that leads to the formulation of plages.
