Coordination of data relay satellite support

Interoperability as it relates to NASDA and ESA plans to implement S-band services compatible with that provided by TDRSS is discussed. The administrative and operational prerequisites for interoperability are introduced with attention given to coordination before and during the mission, and orbital slot planning. Areas for future technical discussions include a more detailed definition of the RF signal structures for achieving a coordinated S-band service and the examination of schemes (such as baseband cooling) which minimize interference while permitting the joint use of the S-band and promoting interoperability.

Ultraviolet response of semitransparent multialkali photocathodes

The UV spectral sensitivity of two semitransparent visible sensitive photocathodes for spaceborne applications, a trialkali, Cs-Na2KSB, and a bialkali, K2CsSb, both on MgF2 substrates. Results show that for extended wavelength coverage, the bialkali photocathode affords increased quantum yield as compared with the trialkali type, and that the latter has a more variable responsivity with wavelength.

Intensified charge coupled devices for ultra low light level imaging

Development of a sensor incorporating a CCD and photocathode for operation in the electron bombarded mode in both a magnetic and an electrostatic focussed, gated configuration is described. Initial format size is 100 x 160 pixels with eventual growth to 400 x 400 pixels. The sensor is part of a digital camera system which includes the low level video conditioning electronics, a camera controller, a high speed buffer memory, and digital recording and display electronics. The memory uses CMOS/SOS and has a capacity of 1.6 Mbits with operating rates of 48 Mbits/sec. Individual frames are co-added to provide wide dynamic range and photometric precision better than 1%. A 4-bit video quantization is used to increase the photon counting detection rate before coincidence losses become serious.

Development of a CCD for ultraviolet imaging using a CCD photocathode combination

CCD in the electron-in mode, coupled with a bi-alkali photocathode to produce UV photon conversion, provides the following desirable features: (1) high UV response of the bi-alkali photocathode; (2) excellent imaging quality of a CCD area array; and (3) high signal-to-noise ratio due to the EBS (electron bombarded silicon) gain of the CCD operating in a tube configuration. This paper describes the rationale and progress made in developing a CCD for use as an UV imager.

LST and supporting technology

In order to realize the LST objectives of high angular resolution, extended wavelength coverage and faint object detection, the performance of the instruments must be matched to that of the telescope. To insure that adequate technology is available by 1976, an intensive SR & T program has been initiated which builds on previous work and is coordinated with work in other agencies. The primary areas of concern are detectors, on-board computers, and ultraviolet optical components. In the last area grating work is being emphasized. The on-board computer will be necessary to allow pre-processing of raw data and enable detector operation in a pulse counting mode. For detectors, the SEC Vidicon development will be continued but the use of solid-state arrays in the electron bombarded mode and channel plate detectors are being seriously considered. One challenging problem is to provide 2 K cooling to permit ultra-sensitive IR observations to be made.

Outside-eclipse spectral changes in beta Lyrae

Five pairs of spectra of the eclipsing binary star beta Lyrae, obtained in May 1971 with the Cassegrain spectrograph of a 36-inch telescope at a dispersion of 39 A per mm, are presented. Variations of the He-I 4471-A line and a possibly related spectral feature are discussed.

Correlations among the parameters of the spherical model for eclipsing binaries.

Correlation coefficients have been computed to investigate the parameters used to describe the spherical model of an eclipsing binary system. Regions in parameter hyperspace have been identified where strong correlations exist and, by implication, the solution determinacy is low. The results are presented in tabular form for a large number of system configurations.

UV photometry of eclipsing variables

UV photometric observations of the eclipsing variable CW Cephei by orbiting OAO-2 instrument package reveal the binary to be a system in an active stage of evolution, with evidence for stellar mass loss or mass exchange.

Advanced electro-optical imaging techniques

The papers presented at the symposium are given which deal with the present state of sensors, as may be applicable to the Large Space Telescope (LST) program. Several aspects of sensors are covered including a discussion of the properties of photocathodes and the operational imaging camera tubes.

The large space telescope

The large scale telescope (LST) intended as a permanent international facility to be placed in near earth orbit to perform astronomical observations, is discussed. The basic elements of the LST are detailed, and the modulation transfer function is presented. Both basic and special instruments are dealt with. The sensor parameters are listed, and the choice of the SEC Vidicon is justified.

Ultraviolet photometry of the eclipsing variable CW Cephei

A series of photometric observations was made of the eclipsing variable CW Cephei on the OAO 2. Approximate elements were derived from the eclipse depths and shape of the secondary. Persistent asymmetries and anomalous light variations, larger than the expected experimental error, were also found, subsequent ground-based observations show H alpha entirely in emission, indicating the presence of an extended gaseous system surrounding one or both components. A detailed comparison was made of the flux distribution of the binary relative to that for the nominally unreddened stars delta Pic, BlIII, and eta Aur, B3V, to investigate the effects of interstellar extinction. The resultant extinction curves, normalized at a wavelength of 3330 A, show a relatively smooth increase with decreasing wavelength.

Ultraviolet photometry of the eclipsing variable CW Cephei

An extended series of photometric observations were made of the eclipsing variable CW Cephei using the Wisconsin instrument on OAO-2. Approximate elements which were derived based solely on the eclipse depths and shape of the secondary are in satisfactory agreement with those found using ground based observations. However, persistent asymmetries and anomalous light variations, all larger than the expected experimental error, were also found; subsequent ground-based observations show H sub alpha entirely in emission indicating the presence of an extended gaseous system surrounding one or both of the components. Consistent solutions utilizing all data at all wavelengths were not found.
