Thermoelectric Properties of Selenides Spinels

Many compounds with the spinel structure type have been analyzed for their thermoelectric properties. Published data was used to augment experimental results presented here to select promising thermoelectric spinels.

Evidence for a Light-Rare-Earth-Element-Depleted Source for Some Ferroan Anorthosites

In the lunar magma ocean model, ferroan anorthosites (FANs) are expected to be derived from a relatively undifferentiated source with chondritic REE abundances and yield the oldest radiometric ages of any lunar rocks. Samarium-neodymium-isotopic analyses of 60025 and 67016 yielded ages of 4.44 +/- 0.02 Ga and 4.53 +/- 0.12 Ga and initial Epsilon(sub Nd)(sup 143) values in excess of -0.5. These ages are within error of ages determined on some Mg-suite rocks by researchers. Thus, the existing data are not completely consistent with the standard magma ocean model. We have completed isotopic analysis on the pristine FAN 62236 in order to place further constraints on lunar crust-forming processes.

Codeless GPS Applications to Multi-Path: CGAMP

Cordless Global Positioning System (GPS) Applications to Multi-Path (CGAMP) is meeting the challenge of exploiting the L-band signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites for the measurement of the impulse response of radio transmission channels over space-Earth paths. This approach was originally suggested by E. K. Smith and has been pursued by J. Lemmon, without an affordable implementation being identifiable. In addition to the high cost of a suitable P code correlating GPS receiver, there is also the major impediment of the often announced Department of Defense policy of selective availability/anti-spoof (SA/AS) that clouds reliable access to the wideband (20 MHz) P channel of the GPS signals without cryptographic access. A technique proposed by MacDoran utilizes codeless methods for exploiting the P channel signals implemented by the use of a pair of antennas and cross correlation signal detection.

A plan for the development of lunar astronomy

This is a report synthesizing discussions of the Astronomy/Astrophysics Definition Team at the Lunar Science Strategy Workshop for the Exploration and Development of the moon which was held at the NASA Johnson Space Center during August 15-16, 1989. The long-term goal of lunar based astronomy is envisioned as the development of a diverse facility covering all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. This facility will build on and eventually replace the Great Observatories. The development of optical and infrared interferometry should be a principal activity, optimized by a lunar site. However, lunar observatories should evolve from simple to complex systems and should not and need not make major demands on the limited amount of manpower envisioned for the first 20 years of the lunar outpost.
