Interactions among the lower valence states of the OH radical

In order to define the origins of experimentally observed predissociations within the A2 sigma/+/ state of OH, overlaps have been computed of the bound level vibrational wavefunctions in the A2 sigma/+/ state with the vibrational continua of states of OH arising from the ground electronic state separated atoms. The dependence of the transition moment upon internuclear distance is derived and compared with previous results. Implications of this analysis in terms of the two body formation of OH are indicated.

Oscillator strengths for neutral sodium and the interstellar sodium abundance in zeta Ophiuchi

Use of the high-frequency deflection technique to measure radiative lifetimes for the 4p and 5p upper states in Na I, along with relative populations of a number of ns and nd states. These data have been used to obtain f-values for the corresponding resonance transitions in Na I, which proved to be in reasonable agreement with previous oscillator strengths. From the theoretical curve of growth for pure Doppler broadening, revised line ratios for D1/3303 are given and are compared with observations of Na I in zeta Oph.

A summary of transition probabilities for atomic absorption lines formed in low-density clouds

A table of wavelengths, statistical weights, and excitation energies is given for 944 atomic spectral lines in 221 multiplets whose lower energy levels lie below 0.275 eV. Oscillator strengths were adopted for 635 lines in 155 multiplets from the available experimental and theoretical determinations. Radiation damping constants also were derived for most of these lines. This table contains the lines most likely to be observed in absorption in interstellar clouds, circumstellar shells, and the clouds in the direction of quasars where neither the particle density nor the radiation density is high enough to populate the higher levels. All ions of all elements from hydrogen to zinc are included which have resonance lines longward of 912 A, although a number of weaker lines of neutrals and first ions have been omitted.

Radiative lifetimes and band oscillator strengths for metal oxides. II - SiO E 1 Sigma /+/-X 1 Sigma /+/

Use of an electron-beam phase-shift apparatus to obtain the radiative lifetimes for vibrational levels of the SiO E 1 Sigma (+) state. It is found that the radiative lifetimes for the vibrational transitions of the E-X band are independent of the vibrational upper state. The measured phase shifts yield cascade free lifetimes of 10.5 plus or minus 1.1 nsec for v' from 1 to 7. Spectroscopic data from Elander and Lagerqvist (1971) were used to calculate potential curves by the Klein-Dunham procedure, and Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids for the transition were computed.

The oscillator strengths of the SO /A 3Pi/-/X 3Sigma-/ band systems.

The oscillator strengths for these SO transition band systems are calculated using RKR Franck-Condon factors and the radiative lifetime previously derived from electron-beam phase-shift measurements by Smith (1971). The SO transition concerned is of considerable astrophysical importance in the search for SO in the interstellar medium by means of space-based telescopes with monochromators since the transition probability is concentrated, as shown, in relatively few transitions from the ground state.

Radiative lifetimes and absolute oscillator strengths for the SiO A/super 1/Pi to X/super 1/Sigma+ transition.

Measurement of a radiative lifetime of 9.6 (plus or minus 1.0) nsec for the SiO A(super 1)Pi state is reported. RKR Franck-Condon factors have been computed and, with these, absolute oscillator strengths are calculated. A band system at 3022 A has been found that may be due to SiO+, but the band is not resolved at our experimental resolution, and identification remains uncertain. The upper state of the carrier of this spectrum has a radiative lifetime of 8.3 (plus or minus 0.8) nsec.

The use of the transmission windows of the Fabry-Perot interferometer in the detection of Raman scattered radiation from atmospheric gases.

Demonstration that the use of the Fabry-Perot interferometer as a filter with transmission windows occurring at regular intervals in wave numbers provides a highly sensitive method for detection of atmospheric gases using their rotational Raman spectra excited by a suitable laser. Some of the operating advantages include signal gains of several orders of magnitude, a simple direct interpretation of the results in terms of the density and types of the gaseous constituents, size and weight reductions from conventional apparatus, ease of operation, and relative freedom from interference from other molecules in the scattering volume. This method is compared with the techniques that have been discussed in the literature by other workers in the field.
