Classification and distribution of WR stars and an interpretation of the WN sequence.

New observational data for Wolf-Rayet stars are interpreted in areas of atmospheric abundances, absolute magnitudes, Galactic distribution, distribution in M33, and bolometric luminosities. The observational data are used in support of arguments (1) that WN stars are helium stars of eight to fourteen solar masses with atmospheres which contain only a very low proportion of hydrogen, (2) that the properties of the stars are very sensitive to this very small amount of hydrogen, and (3) that consequently this structure explains many of the general properties of the subclasses.

Nuclei of planetary nebulae.

Survey of available information about the spectra of emission-line nuclei of planetary nebulae. The spectral features are classified into groups corresponding to WR, O VI, Of, and WR-Of types, and the observations are interpreted in terms of astrophysical processes occurring in these objects.

An interpretation of the WC stars.

The difference in separation that is characteristic of WN and WC binaries is shown to provide an explanation for the observation that spectra of WC stars are apparently unaffected by the presence of a companion, whereas the spectra of WN stars in binary systems appear to be significantly different from those of single stars with a comparable degree of excitation. WC binaries are sufficiently widely separated for the WC atmosphere to remain unperturbed by the presence of the companion, while the companions of WN stars are closer and gravitational perturbation, reflection effects, and limitations of the atmosphere's extent by the Roche lobe may each have an effect.

The absolute magnitudes and spectral types of the stars in the gamma Velorum system.

The ratio of the visual luminosities of the O and WC components of the binary system gamma (2) Vel has been derived by comparison of the emission-line strengths in the spectrum with those in the spectrum of a single WC8 star, HD 192103. The result is 1.4 mag, with the O star being brighter; the classification of the O star was found to be 09 I, so that the classification of gamma (2) Vel is WC8+09 I.

HD 50896 and the composition of Wolf-Rayet atmospheres

Measurements of the Pickering lines of He II in the spectrum of HD 50896 suggest that the upper limit to the H/He ratio is 0.05 by numbers. Spectral scans from OAO-2 show strong lines, nitrogen being observed most strongly as N IV, but also as N III and N V. Carbon and oxygen are observed dominantly in the triply ionized states. Thus, the degree of ionization of C, N and O are comparable. No indication of extensive selective excitation effects is observed. It is concluded that the differences between the WN and WC stars cannot be explained by selective excitation or ionization effects in the WN stars.
