Apollo 17 1-2 mm fines - Mineralogy and petrology

Nine 1-2 mm Apollo 17 soil samples from the South Massif and the Sculptured Hills are examined using petrographic and microprobe techniques. Each soil was separated into six groupings based on macroscopic features observed under a stereomicroscope. The groups and their characteristics are described. Minor differences observed include a higher content of fine-grained, dark, friable breccia and a higher content of high-Mg mafic-bearing fragments in the Sculptured Hills soils. The olivine and pyroxene compositions for light breccia from the soil samples are summarized. During the soil examination, several distinctive fragments seen include coarse orthopyroxene-plagioclase fragments with diopside-rich veins, a plagioclase-forsterite fragment with an igneous texture and a pyroxene-plagioclase fragment with isotropic, subhedral plagioclase grains.

Mineralogy and petrology of some Apollo 16 rocks and fines - General petrologic model of moon

Data published in the literature and original results of mineralogical and petrological analyses of Apollo 16 rocks and fines indicate that Apollo 16 and Luna 20 sites are dominated by plagioclase-rich rocks with minor olivine and/or pyroxene. Data suggest that shock, brecciation, and recrystallization have largely eliminated primary textures. In general, all data are consistent with derivation from ejecta blankets produced from plagioclase-rich rocks by impacts. The lunar crust is discussed as a product of an early differentiation of the entire moon, and Mg/Fe data for experimental olivine-liquid and olivine-orthopyroxene equilibria are used as constraints to examine compositional data for rocks, glasses, and fragments in the light of specific models for crystal-liquid differentiation.

Occurrence of diopside and Cr-Zr-armalcolite on the moon.

Petrographic and electron-microprobe examination of the sample of 1 to 2 mm fines, Apollo 14166,6, has revealed a fragment with the unique lunar mineralogy of plagioclase, olivine, diopside, a Ti-Fe-Zr phase, and a trace of ilminite. The second occurrence of diopside is reported together with the third occurrence of a recently identified Ti-Fe-Zr phase. Microprobe analyses of the principal phases of the fragment studied are presented in a table. The relatively pure diopside analyses reported represent the most Mg-rich calcic pyroxene found in lunar material.

Mineral and bulk compositions of three fragments from Luna 16.

Electron microprobe analyses of fragment G37 show that it is a mare basalt with high aluminum and low magnesium content. Detailed analyses are given of olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, ulvospinel and plagioclase. Fragment G46 is a cinder with bulk composition fairly similar to G37. Fragment G51 is entirely composed of plagioclase, An(93-96), with low contents of minor elements.

Compositions and mineralogy of lithic fragments in 1-2 mm soil samples 14002,7 and 14258,33.

The compositional data obtained are combined with existing data from larger rock samples and compared with bulk analyses of soils to determine compositional ranges and dominant igneous rock types present in the regolith and breccias. Criteria are presented for the recognition of three types of igneous fragments in a limited sample of Apollo 14 material. Explanations for the differences between glass and rock compositions are discussed.

Bipropellant shut-off valve

An advanced design of an all metal, fast response, bipropellant, shut-off valve for use on long duration space missions is reported. The valve provides the flow control capability for a 1,000 lb thrust, bipropellant engine using oxygen difluoride and diborane as propellants. The shutoff seal selection is a soft-on-hard metal concept. The soft seal is a spherical shell that seats against a hard conical seat. Beryllium copper and beryllium nickel seals were selected to seal against an electrolyzed Inconel 718 seat. Poppet shaft sealing is achieved by use of hydroformed, Inconel 718 bellows. Two valve assemblies were fabricated and subjected to a series of tests including leak, response time, flow capacity, dry cycles, water cycles, liquid nitrogen cycles, liquid fluorine cycles, and lead-lag operation cycles. These tests demonstrated the ability of the valve to meet design goals.

Mineralogy of Apollo 15415 ?genesis rock' - Source of anorthosite on moon.

Results of electron microprobe analyses of plagioclase points and pyroxene grains of Apollo 15415 ?genesis rock.' It is pointed out that no evidence of cumulate textures has yet appeared to support suggestions of extensive crystal-liquid differentiation producing an anorthositic crust or a lunar crust composed of a mixture of plagioclase-rich rock, basalts and minor ultramafic material, which require that plagioclase crystals float in a basaltic liquid. The plagioclase in 15415 does not show cumulate texture either. It is noted that it remains to be seen whether rock 15415 is correctly named the ?genesis rock.'
