The revised 3C catalog of radio sources - A review of optical identifications and spectroscopy

We present a catalog of the important optical data for the radio sources in the Revised Third Cambridge Catalog. Optical positions, redshifts, magnitudes, and identifications have been included, as well as radio flux densities and spectral indices for the sample of 297 extragalactic 3CR sources. A bibliography of optical identifications, spectroscopy, and radio position/structure is also given. In addition to the literature compilation, we present new spectroscopic observations of 27 3CR radio galaxies, 25 of which do not have previously published redshifts.

External tank gaseous oxygen line simulated lightning tests

Tests were made to evaluate the effects of lightning strikes on the shuttle external tank gaseous oxygen pressurization line. This line, designed to conduct gaseous oxygen may also act as a lightning conductor. Questions have been raised as to the potential hazard of this line as a lightning conductor with speculation as to the damage that might occur to the pressurization line, and the adjacent thermal protective surfaces, from a lightning strike. The region of investigation was from above the cone of the launch tower lightning protection to 15.24 km (50, 000 ft) altitude. Tests were performed on samples of thin wall stainless steel tubing filled with gaseous oxygen under simulated flight conditions. No specimen malfunctions occurred when the tests were conducted according to JSC specifications. Based on the JSC specifications and the results of these tests, it is concluded that a lightning strike will not cause a malfunction of the shuttle external tank gaseous oxygen line made of the representative material tested.

Closed-circuit television welding- electrode guidance system

Closed-circuit TV camera is mounted parallel to electrode and moves along with it. Camera is scanned along seam so seam is viewed parallel with scan lines on TV monitor. Two fiber optics illuminators are attached to guidance system; they illuminate seam for TV camera.

Cardiotachometer displays heart rate on a beat-to-beat basis

Electronics for this system may be chosen so that complete calculation and display may be accomplished in a few milliseconds, far less than even the fastest heartbeat interval. Accuracy may be increased, if desired, by using higher-frequency timing oscillator, although this will require large capacity registers at increased cost.

Digital computing cardiotachometer

A tachometer is described which instantaneously measures heart rate. During the two intervals between three succeeding heart beats, the electronic system: (1) measures the interval by counting cycles from a fixed frequency source occurring between the two beats; and (2) computes heat rate during the interval between the next two beats by counting the number of times that the interval count must be counted to zero in order to equal a total count of sixty times (to convert to beats per minute) the frequency of the fixed frequency source.

Spectroscopic observations of the Cygnus X-1 optical candidate.

Data from nine high-dispersion spectra of HDE 226868, the optical candidate for Cyg X-1, are presented. The line profiles at He II (4686 A) show marked changes from night to night. Our data are not compatible with models where the emission line arises from the unseen secondary component of the system, as has been suggested by other observers. We propose that the emission originates in a gas stream falling toward the secondary; this provides observational evidence that the X-ray source is powered by accretion. We also see changes in spectral type and luminosity class with phase, further complicating attempts to make mass estimates for the system.

Identification of the X-ray pulsar in Hercules: A new optical pulsar

A series of photographic, photoelectric, and spectroscopic observations beginning June 1, 1972 has led to the optical identification of Her X-1 (2U 1705 + 34), a pulsed X-ray source in an eclipsing binary system, with the thirteenth magnitude blue variable star HZ Herculis. The detection of optical pulses at the frequency of the X-ray pulsar on three nights makes the identification conclusive and establishes HZ Her as the second known optical pulsar. The strength of the optical pulses may be correlated with the orbital phase but is not obviously related to the high or low intensity states of the X-ray source.

Communications system for zero-g simulation tests in water

System connects seven observers, diver, and spare station, and utilizes public address system with underwater speakers to provide two-way communications between test subject and personnel in control of life support, so that test personnel are warned immediately of malfunction in pressure suit or equipment.

EKG isolator

Light beam transmits heartbeat signal from electrodes on patient to electrocardiograph without exposing patient to possible severe electrical shock. System provides complete isolation between patient and EKG instrumentation.
