Particle Vertical Mixing and Horizontal Conveyance Within an Ambient Temperature Fluidized Bed

Previous studies have shown the advantages of particle-to-sCO2 fluidized bed (FB) heat exchangers, which include high heat transfer coefficients, low material cost, and the ability to horizontally convey solid particles. This paper outlines the design and testing of a compact cold flow FB test apparatus to characterize horizontal conveyance through convolutions within a 100 kWth FB heat exchanger design. Horizontal conveyance is an advantage in FBs because it enables more compact designs for heat exchangers. Two mass flow rates, 0.5 & 1 kg/s, at the inlet & outlet of the FB. To determine consistency of the flow rates, Student’s t-tests were used to assess whether the inlet & outlet values were statistically similar. The mass flow rate exiting the bed was statistically similar to the flow rate entering the bed for both cases, but each case featured a wider range and standard deviation. The range and standard deviation of the 1 kg/s flow rate was 0.69-1.23 kg/s and 0.12 kg/s respectively, and the 0.5 kg/s test featured a range and standard deviation of 0.37-0.73 kg/s and 0.09 kg/s, respectively. These measurements provide confidence that large-scale designs can successfully horizontally convey particles at ````~1.5x minimum fluidization velocity (Umf) without significant variation in flow rate. A method to characterize the degree of particle vertical mixing and bubble frequency within the FB is also introduced. By using a high-resolution camera together with particle velocimetry, particle motion in the X and Y directions can be estimated to assess bed mixing and bubble frequency.

Design of a High Flux Beam Characterization Device for Falling Particle Receivers

This paper outlines the design and error analysis for a flux characterization device (i.e. flux wand) which traverses the aperture of a falling particle receiver cavity providing the incident power measurement needed for the calculation of receiver efficiency without significantly disrupting receiver output. The design features a linear actuator, water cooled extension arm, and refractory bar. The refractory bar/flux wand is a diffusely reflective surface which reflects light as it is translated across the receiver aperture to provide a light intensity distribution that is correlated to a measured flux. The component sizing, constrained by a typical 30 frame per second camera and a 4-point average of the measured reflectance, is presented. Simulation reveals the error that results from a 5% variation in flux wand reflectance is within 4% of the true value.

Heliostat Consortium Annual Report: 2023

The Heliostat Consortium for Concentrating Solar-Thermal Power (HelioCon) began in 2021, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Office to advance U.S. heliostat technologies over the next five years. This report provides detailed information on progress the HelioCon team has made since its founding, including expanding the number of partnerships with industry, research, education, and other institutions; increasing our staff; providing information to a growing audience through our web presence; and participating in national and international conferences with industry leaders.

OpenCSP v.1.0

SAND2024-08987O OpenCSP analyzes and improves the performance of optical mirrors that reflect sunlight and concentrate it onto a receiver. The algorithms in this library analyze the flow of light from an original source—such as the sun—reflecting off one or more mirrors, and onto a receiver, optical screen, or camera. OpenCSP also analyzes optical systems using other techniques, such as shape or slope comparison. The software calculates aggregate properties of the optical system, such as its efficiency, manufacturing error, pointing control error, expected performance, and other useful parameters. OpenCSP also includes high-level tools, such as Open SOFAST, a program that obtains high-resolution measurement of CSP mirrors, full heliostats, and other CSP collectors. OpenCSP supports producing meaningful output data to help CSP designers and field operators improve the performance of their systems. OpenCSP also includes classes and functions that support these calculations, including input utilities, analysis output libraries, geometric constraint analysis for drone flight planning, and more. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.
