Simulated optical images of galaxies at z about 1 using ultraviolet images of nearby galaxies

Ultraviolet sounding rocket images of several nearby galaxies are used to simulate the appearance in optical bandpasses of similar systems at redshifts z = 0.5-2.67, as observed by the WFPC on HST and by ground-based instruments. Since the morphology of galaxies is a strong function of the wavelength, the appearance of galaxies at large redshifts is subjected to a large k-correction effect. The strong dependence of monochromatic surface brightness on redshift also implies that observed morphology of distant systems will be crucially dependent on the limiting surface brightness set by the sky background. Although the angle subtended by sources depends only weakly on z, the fraction of a galaxy whose surface brightness is above the detection threshold varies strongly with z. Morphological distinctions of spiral from elliptical, spiral from irregular, and barred from unbarred types become more difficult, as does accurate evaluation of interactions or of the local environment.

High time-resolution imaging with the MAMA detector systems

Current uses of the MAMA detector which utilize the photon time-tagging capabilities of these detectors are reported. These applications currently include image stabilization by means of post-processing corrections of platform drift and speckle interferometry. The initial results of a sounding rocket experiment to obtain UV images of NGC 6240 and results from speckle interferometry of Neptune's moon Triton are presented.

IUE spectra of HD 269665 (Sk -68 deg 110), a hot subdwarf in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Comparison of high- and low-resolution IUE spectra of HD 269665 (Sanduleak -68 deg 110) show that the star is a subdwarf with a temperature in the range 30,000-50,000 K. The visual spectrum shows Balmer lines and weak He II 4686 A lines. Balmer-line width and a fit of the UV-visual flux distribution using the Blackwell-Shallis (1977) algorithm yields an effective temperature between 30,000 and 38,000 K and log g = 5-6. A table is presented of photospheric UV spectral lines in HD 269665. The radial velocity of the star is found to be 5.8 + or - 0.5 km/s.

Ultraviolet spectroscopy of the 'jetlike' condensations of NGC 4151

The spectrometers aboard the IUE are used to obtain UV spectroscopy of the jetlike condensations seen extending 18 arcsec from the nucleus of the nearby Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151. New data reduction techniques are used to detect, delineate, and measure weak nebular emission in IUE spectra. Spatially resolved extended emission is seen in both semiforbidden C III 1909 A and C IV 1549 A. The deduced integrated fluxes in the jet are 10 to the 14th and 4 x 10 to the 14th ergs/sq cm/s for C III and C IV, respectively. The observed fluxes are compared with predictions based upon a central source photoionization model. The implied high C IV/C III flux ratio is shown to be inconsistent with this model and suggests an additional source of ionization for the jet.

Vacuum ultraviolet images of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Linearized, absolutely calibrated VUV images of the LMC with a resolution of about 50 arcsec are presented. The images were made by a sounding rocket payload in two bandpasses with effective wavelengths for hot stars near 1500 A and 1930 A. The flux in each bandpass is measured for the associations in the list of Lucke and Hodge (1970). The results are discussed and their relationship to the overall characteristics of star formation in the LMC are discussed. A simple model for propagating star formation in the LMC is presented whose results closely resemble the distribution of associations revealed by the VUV images.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry of Comet Giacobini-Zinner during the ICE encounter

The IUE's UV spectrophotometer was used to monitor Comet Giacobini-Zinner's H2O production rate from June to October, 1985, in support of the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) mission. Observation results for the spatial and temporal variation and the abundance or upper limits of C, CO, CO(+), CO2(+), CS, H, Mg(+), O, OH, and S, between September 9 and 12, included the time of the ICE encounter: at this time, the H2O production rate obtained was consistent with a number of gas production rates derived indirectly from the ICE experiments. A comparison of the CO2(+) ion abundance with the total electron density measured by the plasma electron and radio science experiments on ICE implies an ion deficiency relative to electrons, so that the satisfaction of charge balance criteria requires the presence of a major ion population not detected by remote sensing.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry of comet Giacobini-Zinner during the ICE encounter

The IUE spectrophotometry of Comet P/Giacobini-Zinner was acquired in support of the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) mission. The abundances (or upper limits) of UV-active species were calculated. During the ICE encounter the H2O production rate was 3 times 10 to the 28th power/sec, + or - 50%, consistent with values derived from the ICE experiments. Comparison of the abundance of CO2(+) ions with the total electron density measured by the plasma electron experiment on ICE indicates a deficiency of ions relative to electrons indicating a population of ions not detected by remote sensing. The absence of detectable Mg(+) rules out this species as a possible ion of M/Q = 24 detected by the Ion Composition Instrument, part of the ICE complement of instruments.
