The magnetopause at 5.2 R/E/ in August 1972 - Magnetopause motion

The paper analyzes magnetic field records from ATS 5 and Explorer 45 satellites, provided with triaxial flux gate magnetometer, during the close approach of the magnetopause to the earth. Attention is directed to a discussion of the observing arrangements, a detailed comparison of the two sets of observations, and an interpretation of the magnetopause motion and of magnetic pulsations. The pulsations appear not to be due to surface waves propagating in the magnetopause.

Average daily variations in the magnetic field as observed by ATS-5

Hourly averages of the magnetic field components are determined and analyzed using the measurements of the magnetic field monitor aboard the ATS-5. The data covering the time period of September 1969 through September 1971 are sorted and analyzed for various Kp values, geomagnetic latitude of the subsolar point, and local time. Local time variations are harmonically analyzed, and amplitudes and phases are given up to the fourth harmonic.

Magnetospheric electric field measurements during sudden commencements

Direction measurements of electric fields were made in the outer magnetosphere during two sudden commencements in 1972. These measurements were observed with the double floating probe experiment carried aboard the IMP 6 satellite. The initial variations of the measured electric field consisted of an increase from a background of about 1 mv/meter to some 10 mv/meter at about 7 rE (earth radi) and to some 4 mv/meter at 3 rE. These initial electric field disturbances were longitudinal, oriented counter clockwise about an axis pointed north. A solution of Maxwell's third equation is derived for these measurements using a quasi-static version of Mead's model of the magnetosphere B (t). This solution seems to describe well the magnitude and direction of the initial perturbation of the electric field vectors observed during these two sudden commencements. After the initial increase, the measured electric field rings several times with periods of the order of minutes. This observed oscillatory behavior correlates with magnetic observatory records taken near the foot of the magetic field line passing through the satellite.

Average daily variations in the magnetic field as observed by ATS-5

Hourly averages of the magnetic field components are determined and analyzed using the measurements, by the magnetic field monitor (MFM) aboard the ATS-5 satellite. The data covering the time period of September 1969 through September 1971 are sorted and analyzed for various Kp values, geomagnetic latitude of the subsolar point, and local time. Local time variations are harmonically analyzed, and amplitudes and phases are given up to the fourth harmonic.

Magnetospheric-field distortions observed by OGO 3 and 5.

The rubidium vapor magnetometer data of the scalar magnetic-field intensity obtained by the OGO 3 and 5 satellites are analyzed to study the magnetospheric-field distortions in terms of the observed field magnitude under quiet and slightly disturbed conditions minus the magnitude of the reference geomagnetic field (delta B). Average contours of equal delta Bs are shown in the geomagnetic noon-midnight and dawn-dusk meridian planes for magnetically quiet and slightly disturbed conditions. The equatorial distribution of observed delta Bs as a function of geocentric distance differs substantially from that expected from the well-known models of the quiet-time ring current. Other findings suggest that there must be a population of low-energy particles with substantial total energy near the equator at distances of 2 to 5 earth radii that has not been recognized as having sufficient energy to inflate the magnetic field.
