Sheath effects on current collection by particle detectors with narrow acceptance angles

Restriction of the aperture acceptance angle of an ion or electron trap on an attracting spacecraft significantly alters the volt-ampere characteristics of the instrument in a low Mach number plasma. It is shown when the angular acceptance of the aperture is restricted the current to the collector tends to be independent of the Debye length. Expressions for the RPA characteristics for both a thin sheath and a thick sheath are derived; and it is shown that as the aperture is narrowed the curves tend toward equivalence.

A note on antenna models in a warm isotropic plasma

The electron-transparent and electron-reflecting models of antennas in a warm isotropic plasma are reexamined. It is shown that a purely electrical treatment of both the models without an explicit use of the boundary condition on electron velocity yields the same results as those previously obtained through an electromechanical treatment. The essential difference between the two models is that for the electron-reflecting model, fields are nonzero only in the exterior region, while for the electron-transparent model, they are nonzero both in the exterior and interior regions of the antenna. This distinction helps in clarifying some misconceptions about these models of antennas in warm isotropic plasma.

Some features of inverted-V events as seen from simulated double layers

Results from a numerical simulation of a double layer show some features similar to those of inverted-V events. The strong heating of thermal and precipitating electrons is observed along with extremely low frequency fluctuations found during inverted-V events. It is suggested that after the acceleration of auroral electrons by the double layer, the precipitating free electrons are heated by the nonlinear effects of the electron beam plasma instability. Fluctuations and pulsations of auroral electron fluxes during auroral events are caused by a relaxation type of oscillation. The finite extent of one dimensional plasma is simulated by solving the Vlasov and Poisson equations as an initial and boundary value problem.
