Characteristics of slush and boiling methane and methane mixtures

Review of investigation results on the characteristics of slush (i.e., mixtures of liquid and solid) and boiling methane, and of binary mixtures of methane and other natural gas constituents, intended for use as fuels for high performance aircraft, rocket engines, and motor vehicles. The investigation extends to the characterization of slush prepared from pure methane and binary mixtures of methane with nitrogen, ethane, and propane, and the boiling properties of these mixtures.

Part A: Hydrocarbon Suspension in Slush Hydrogen

Methods of preparing suspensions of a hydrocarbon in slush hydrogen for nuclear fuel element corrosion inhibition in rocket engines were investigated. Suspensions were prepared using approximately 5000 ppm by mass of methane, ethane, or cyclopropane in slush hydrogen. The suspensions were stable in the slush, but the hydrocarbons settled out of the liquid melt.

Part B: Heat Transfer to Slush Hydrogen

Heat transfer to slush hydrogen was measured at one atmosphere and at triple-point pressure. The data were compared with those for heat transfer to liquid hydrogen, and to classical heat transfer correlations for nucleate boiling. The slush data fit convective heat transfer correlations quite well. In general, the data show that for a given heat flux, the temperature difference between the wall and the bulk liquid is not as highly influenced by pressure as predicted by the core correlation for nucleate boiling.

Hydrogen slush density reference system

A hydrogen slush density reference system was designed for calibration of field-type instruments and/or transfer standards. The device is based on the buoyancy principle of Archimedes. The solids are weighed in a low-mass container so arranged that solids and container are buoyed by triple-point liquid hydrogen during the weighing process. Several types of hydrogen slush density transducers were developed and tested for possible use as transfer standards. The most successful transducers found were those which depend on change in dielectric constant, after which the Clausius-Mossotti function is used to relate dielectric constant and density.

Characteristics of slush and boiling methane and methane mixtures.

Methane gas of two purities, 99.97% and 99%, was condensed to study the characteristics of the boiling liquid and the slush. In addition, binary mixtures of nitrogen and methane, and those of ethane and methane, and propane and methane, were also studied. Potential advantages of these gases when employed as fuels for high-performance aircraft, rocket engines, and motor vehicles are emphasized.
